STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Fueled by a five inning start by junior
Quinlan Montgomery that allowed one earned run over five innings and an 11-run sixth inning offensive explosion, the Stony Brook baseball team earned its ninth victory of the season Tuesday afternoon, knocking off Iona 12-2 at Joe Nathan Field.
For only the second time in his career, the right-hander tossed 5.0 innings and chucked a career-best eight strikeouts while allowing just one earned run. After allowing the run in the first inning, Montgomery settled in by allowing one hit over the next four innings and sat down nine of the next 11 batters that he faced.
It was a pitcher's duel for the first five innings at Joe Nathan Field, as both teams combined for one run and four hits throughout the stretch. But, after sophomore JT Raab entered the game in the sixth inning and retired three batters in order, the Stony Brook offense sent 16 batters to the plate and erupted for 11 runs in the sixth inning.
The Seawolves scored 10 of their 11 runs with two outs in the inning.
Beginning the rally was graduate Evan Giordano bringing in junior Evan Fox, who extended his on-base streak to 33 games dating back to last season, on a base knock that allowed the speedster to get home. Then, senior Derek Yalon making his first start of the season in the cleanup spot delivered a single to left, giving Stony Brook two runners on with one out.
First-year student Jason Campo made his first career start and produced a go-ahead double that brought in Yalon and Giordano to make the score 3-1. Stony Brook would follow with five more runs on free passes. Sophomore Chris Leone and Fox drew RBI walks, junior Ryan Micheli and Yalon drove in a run each after tallying a HBP, and Leone scored on a pass-ball. To cap off the inning, junior Matt Brown-Eiring mashed a two-RBI double to left field, giving Stony Brook an 11-1 lead.
Raab tossed 3.0 innings out of the pen, allowing one earned run and struck out four batters to earn his second victory of the season. Southpaw Eric Foster made his first appearance of the season and finished the final three outs in order to secure the 12-2 victory.
