STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Three Stony Brook pitchers combined to four-hit Seton Hall and a three-RBI day by senior
Catherine Anne Kupinski propelled the Seawolves to a 4-1 win on Wednesday afternoon.
Stony Brook pitchers
Ashton Melaas,
Amanda Flynn, and
Mia Haynes combined to hold the Pirates to just four hits and one run. The trio pitched to contact all day long as they struck out two batters but were backed by stellar defense en route to their third win in a row.
Melaas took the ball and spun four innings of two-hit ball as she was credited with her third win of the season. Flynn made her second appearance of the season and bridged the gap to Haynes with an inning of scoreless relief. Haynes closed the door in the sixth and seventh innings, respectively, as she earned her first save of the season.
After Seton Hall got on the board first in the top of the third inning, Stony Brook responded in the bottom half of the frame when Kupinski laced a double to the right field fence that tied the game up at 1-1.
Freshman infielder
Naiah Ackerman gave the Seawolves a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when she poked a single up the middle to chase home sophomore
Alyssa Costello. Kupinski struck again in the bottom of the fifth inning, this time she mashed a two-run home run that gave Stony Brook the insurance that it needed as it held on to win, 4-1.
With one out and a runner at second in the top of the seventh inning, senior third baseman
Brooke Dye made a big-time play for the Seawolves. Kelsey Carr ripped a ground ball into the third base-shortstop hole, Dye dove to her left, picked the ball up, and fired it over to first to secure the second out of the inning. The next batter went on to ground out to Ackerman and the Seawolves held on to seal their third win in a row.
STATS AND NOTES
- Kupinski went 2-3 at the dish with a home run, double, and three RBI. The homer was her fifth of the season as she added another to her career-high. It was her third multi-RBI game of the season.

QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"I am really happy with our effort today. I thought we played a complete ball game to beat a good Seton Hall team. I liked that we were strong in all three facets of the game – offense, defense, and pitching. We came up with some big plays on defense. We had three pitchers combine to limit a good offensive team to four hits and we did what we needed to do offensively," said head coach
Megan T. Bryant.
