MIAMI, Fla. – Senior catcher
Corinne Badger and the Seawolves returned to the FIU softball field on Friday, a place where she clubbed six home runs over the course of a five-game tournament last season. Badger picked up right where she left off a year ago as she slugged three home runs in game one of the 2023 FIU Classic against Stonehill, en route to a 10-1 win in five innings.
Junior pitcher
Mia Haynes put together another standout performance in the circle as she tossed a 5.0-inning complete and surrendered just one run against Stonehill. The reigning CAA Pitcher of the Week racked up six strikeouts and scattered just three hits in her fourth win of the season.
Badger put on a show as she went 3-3 at the dish with two solo home runs and a two-run shot in Stony Brook's run-rule victory over Stonehill. Badger became the third student-athlete in the NCAA this season to hit three home runs in a game this season (Allie Cummins from Miami Ohio hit three vs. IPFW on Feb. 15 and Jayda Kearney from Georgia hit three vs. Ohio State on Feb. 10).
She is the first CAA student-athlete to hit three home runs in a game this season and the first overall CAA athlete to accomplish the feat since former CAA member JMU's Hannah Shifflett hit a trio of homers against George Mason on March 30, 2022.
In game two of the FIU Classic, Stony Brook was defeated by Nevada, 10-3. After falling behind, 8-0, the Seawolves rallied and put together a three-run bottom of the fifth inning. McFarland and Badger plated the runs in the fifth as Stony Brook inched away at Nevada's lead.
The Wolf Pack extended their advantage in the top of the seventh with a two-run home run, which gave them a 10-3 lead, and they would hold on by that same score.
GAME 1: STONY BROOK – 10, STONEHILL – 1 (Final in five innings)
- Badger opened the scoring in the second inning with a solo home run to left field which was the first of five runs that the Seawolves scored in the frame.
- Junior outfielder Alicia Orosco brought home a pair of runs with a two-run double down the left field line to extend the lead to 3-0. Junior infielder Kyra McFarland followed up with a two-run single to center to plate two more runs and cap off Stony Brook's five-run second inning.
- After giving up a run in the bottom of the second, the Seawolves got the run right back as Badger launched her second homer of the day to put Stony Brook out in front 6-1.
- Badger's third home run of the day came in the top of the fourth inning, and it was a two-run blast to left to give the Seawolves the 9-1 advantage.
- Stony Brook plated its final run of the game in the top of the fifth when McFarland and Orosco executed a double steal. McFarland swiped second, while Orosco took home to put the Seawolves up 10-1, a score they would hang on to win by.
- It was Badger's third multi-home run game of her career. She previously hit two home runs in back-to-back games on the same day to open last season on February 25, 2022, vs. Drexel & FIU. Her three homers give her 22 in her career, which are the ninth-most in program history.
GAME 2: STONY BROOK – 3, NEVADA – 10 (Final in five innings)
- After falling behind, 8-0, Stony Brook put together a three-run bottom of the fifth inning to cut into Nevada's lead. McFarland got the Seawolves on the board with an RBI single down the left field line which brought home junior outfielder Julianna Sanzone.
- Badger followed up with a two-out two-run single to right field to cut the deficit to 8-3. Badger's single chased home Orosco and McFarland.
- Nevada added a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning when Maile Olsen hit a two-run home run to put the Wolf Pack up, 10-3.
- Maddie Male made the start in the circle for Stony Brook.
QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"We took care of business in game one and had the momentum the entire game. Corinne certainly had herself a game with the three home runs and just had a great approach at the plate.
In the second game, we didn't help ourselves enough offensively early on and that would have made a big difference. I thought we made some big plays defensively but we gave a good offensive team too much in that fourth. We will learn a lot from this last game," said head coach
Megan T. Bryant.
