Softball Earns Split Against Tournament Host FIU

MIAMI, Fla. – The Stony Brook softball team earned a split on day two of the FIU Classic. The Seawolves dropped game one on Saturday against FIU, 8-5, and then picked up an 8-7 win over the hosts in the second game of the day.

In game one, FIU jumped out to an early 4-0 lead as it plated a pair of runs in the first two innings, respectively. Stony Brook responded by rallying for four runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to take a 5-4 lead. FIU plated two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to go ahead, 8-5, a lead that it would not relinquish.

The Seawolves would bounce right back in game two as they came away with an 8-7 win over the Panthers in a back-and-forth contest. Stony Brook was fueled by junior outfielders Alicia Orosco, Julianna Sanzone, and senior outfielder Shauna Nuss who all registered three-hit games.

With the game tied at 7-7 in the top of the seventh inning, Orosco knocked in the game-winning run with a single that brought home Sanzone. Senior pitcher Ashton Melaas closed the door in the bottom of the seventh as she tossed a 1-2-3 inning to pick up her first career save.

GAME 1: STONY BROOK – 5, FIU – 8
  • Sanzone went 1-3 at the dish with an RBI double. Her double drove in sophomore outfielder Alyssa Costello in the top of the fourth inning.
  • Freshman Naiah Ackerman recorded her first career RBI with a pinch-hit run scoring single that chased home Sanzone in the fourth.
  • Junior infielder Ashley Jacobson launched her first homer of the year, a solo shot, that gave Stony Brook a 5-4 lead in the top of the fifth.
  • Nuss collected a multi-hit game by going 2-3 with a pair of singles.
GAME 2: STONY BROOK – 8, FIU – 7
  • The Seawolves picked up a thrilling 8-7 win in a back-and-forth contest behind Orosco, Sanzone, and Nuss all recording three-hit games.
  • Orosco went 3-4 at the plate with a double and two RBI. The junior knocked in the game-winning run with a single in the top of the seventh. It marked her first three-hit game of the season and first since she collected three hits in a game against Sacred Heart on March 31, 2022.
  • Sanzone stayed hot at the plate by going 3-4 as well with a double and an RBI. The junior drove in a run in the top of the fifth with a single to center. It was Sanzone's first career three-hit game.
  • Nuss also collected three hits as she went 3-3 at the dish with three singles, an RBI, a run scored, and a walk. Like Sanzone, it also was Nuss' first career three-hit game.
  • Costello went 1-4 at the plate with two RBI. She drove in a pair of runs with a two-run double to right center in the top of the second.
  • Junior Mia Haynes picked up the win in relief and Melaas earned her first career save.
QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"We did not play well at all in game one and still managed to lose a close one. It was great to see our team respond the way we did to play a great ball game in game two. It was a true team win and we had to grind it out. These are the types of games that are important to the development of our team and will get us ready for CAA play," said head coach Megan T. Bryant.
