Abel Sets Two Program Records at Day One of IC4A Championships

BOSTON, Mass. – The Stony Brook University men's track and field team came out strong on day one of the IC4A Championships on Saturday at Boston University.
 
Senior Patrick Abel had an historic day for the Seawolves by setting a new program record in the 60 meter dash, as the Brooklyn native crossed the finish line 6.87 for third- place, earning a ticket to the finals. Abel beat his own record that he set last week on the final day of the CAA Championships with a final time of 6.91.

Also, Abel earned a new program record in the 200 meter dash, finishing the race at 21.60 for sixth-place to advance into the finals. 
 
After becoming the first student-athlete in program history to bring home a CAA Indoor Track & Field title, graduate student Carlos Santos Jr. returned to the 5000 meter run with 14:05.49. Santos beat his time from last week's CAA Championships after he touched the wall at 14:09.28 to earn the title. 
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Seawolves had two runners place in the top-10 for the 1 mile run preliminaries. Graduate Robert Becker finished at 4:06.90 for fourth-place, followed by senior Aiden Smyth coming in at 4:06.53 for eighth-place.
  • Sophomore Nicolas Lavazoli recorded a 12th-place finish in the 200 meter dash, after finishing the race at 21.80.
  • Graduate Joshua Titus led the squad in the 60 meter hurdles with a 14th-place finish at 8.42 in the preliminaries and 12th-place finish at 8.42 in the semi-finals. 
  • Stony Brook is currently in a tie with Cornell University at 13th-place out of 25 teams.

"It was a very good first day for us", said head coach Andy Ronan. "Patrick had a terrific performance recording program records in the 60 and 200… I'm proud of another gritty performance by Carlos", said head coach Andy Ronan. "I felt like we competed well and was happy with the result being that we have a good group coming back in the finals tomorrow".

The Seawolves are back in action tomorrow, March 5, for the final day of the IC4A Championships.
