STONY BROOK, N.Y. — The Stony Brook tennis team was stellar from start to finish today as they earned their 18th consecutive victory in the battle of Long Island by defeating Hofstra University, 7-0.
Not suffering a defeat today, the squad began their afternoon with a doubles victory by senior
Kristine Theys and first-year student
Debby Mastrodima in 6-2 fashion. Then, the tandem of graduate student
Loreto Villalba-Rubio and first-year student
Kristi Boro finished off doubles with a 6-4 victory of their own.
In singles play, the Seawolves dominated in nearly all their matches by winning in straight-sets five of the six matches. Boro and Mastrodima both won their straight sets by not dropping a point in one of the two sets as Boro earned a 6-0 and 6-4 victory, while Mastrodima was nearly spotless with her 6-1 and 6-0 win. Senior
Mathilde Sreeves also produced a 6-1 and 6-2 victory.
After earning a relentless 7-5 victory in her first set, junior
Chandrika Joshi came back with a 6-2 win to secure the point for her team. After beating her opponent 6-2 in the first set, Sophomore
Sara Annamaria Medved held off late rally in the second set by holding on the the 7-5 victory to win the match.
In the match of the day, Rubio fell behind 0-6 in the first set. But, the graduate did not surrender and fought back to win the next set 6-4. In the match deciding set, Rubio ultimately pulled away with the 10-4 victory to give Stony Brook the clean sweep.

The Seawolves return to the court on Saturday at noon for their final home match of the season as they take on former America East rival, Binghamton University. The squad is 12-9 all-time against the Bearcats and have won their last 11 meetings against the New York rival. Before the match, the Seawolves will celebrate their senior class, Rubio, Theys, and Sreeves. With the victory today, the Seawolves move to 19-6 at University Courts since the 2017-2018 season.
