PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Stony Brook women's lacrosse team (9-3, 4-0 CAA) fell to Rutgers (5-7, 0-5 Big Ten), 12-7, at SHI Stadium on Wednesday evening.
Senior attacker
Kailyn Hart led the offensive effort for the Seawolves, tallying three goals on the night. Senior midfielder
Charlotte Verhulst and junior midfielder
Jaden Hampel followed behind Hart with a pair of goals each.
Stony Brook got on the board first with 12:39 left to play in the first quarter courtesy of Hampel. The Scarlet Knights answered back five minutes later with back-to-back goals of their own to take a 2-1 lead.
The Seawolves did not give up as Verhulst converted a free position attempt to tie the contest at 2-2. Stony Brook was able to grab hold of a 4-3 lead after Hart scored with 2:54 remaining in the first quarter. However, the 4-3 lead would be the last lead that the squad would hold as Rutgers found the back of the cage in the final 1:25 of the quarter to tie the game at 4-4.
The Scarlet Knights struck first coming out of the quarter break to take the lead once again, 5-4. Rutgers kept the momentum rolling into the second half to ultimately run away with the 12-7 victory.
STATS AND NOTES
- Hart led the Seawolves' offense and registered her seventh hat trick of the season.
- Hampel recorded a pair of goals and added three draw controls.
- Verhulst tallied her third multi-goal contest of the season and secured two draw controls.
- Graduate defender Haley Dillon recorded a team-high two caused turnovers and oicked up a ground ball.
- Ellie Masera and Clare Levy both registered three ground balls. Masera also added two draw controls.
NEXT UP
The Seawolves return home to Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium to take on William & Mary on Saturday, April 15 for Senior Day. Face-off is set for 11 a.m. and the game will be broadcast live on LacrosseTV.
