Baseball Falls to Northeastern in Extra Innings to Open Series

STONY BROOK, N.Y. — The Stony Brook baseball team rallied to tie the game in the bottom half of the eighth inning but ultimately lost 8-3 to Northeastern University on Friday on a Husky walk-off single in the 10th inning at Joe Nathan Field.

The Seawolves (12-19, 4-9 CAA) sent out graduate Ben Fero to make his team-high eighth start of the season and fifth in conference play. For the fifth time in the last sixth game, the right-hander completed 6.0 innings as he went 6.1 innings, allowing three runs (earned) and struck out two batters.

After Northeastern (27-6, 9-4 CAA) tallied a run in the second and third inning, Fero settled in by not allowing a run over the next three innings or a runner to third base. In the fifth inning, Fero got help from graduate Evan Giordano as he made an inning-ending double-play to strand two runners on base.

Senior Shane Paradine got the Seawolves offense going in the fifth by cracking the first hit of the game for the squad to lead off the inning. Then, on the next pitch junior Matt Brown-Eiring tallied a hit of his own. Senior Derek Yalon followed with another knock to load the bases with nobody out. Senior Brett Paulsen got the Seawolves on the board by grounding into a double-play, cutting the deficit to 2-1.

To lead off the seventh inning, Fero surrendered a homerun that forced graduate Kyle Johnson into the game. After allowing the bases to load, the right-hander delivered the swinging strikeout to end the inning and give the momentum back to Stony Brook.

Trailing 2-1 entering the bottom half of the eighth inning, Paulsen led off the frame by reaching on an error and Miceli followed by reaching on a hit-by-pitch. After a Seawolf strikeout, junior Evan Fox produced a clutch knock to left-field, bringing home Paulsen. The Seawolves tied the game the next batter with junior Ryan Micheli tallying the RBI knock to right field, tying the game at 3-3.

The Seawolves were unable to capitalize on a triple by Yalon in the bottom half of the ninth and surrendered five runs in the 10th to ultimately fall 8-3 in extra innings.
