HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The Stony Brook baseball team was narrowly edged by Hofstra, 4-0, on Sunday afternoon in the series finale in Hempstead. The Seawolves received a standout pitching performance from freshman
Eddie Smink but he was outdueled by the Pride's Brad Camarda who tossed a complete game shutout.
Smink went 7.0 innings and surrendered three runs (earned) and struck out five. It was the deepest that the freshman has pitched into a game in his career. Smink struck out five and walked two. His five strikeouts tied a season-high as he also registered five punch outs at Troy on February 25. His 7.0 innings of work marked the longest start this season by a Seawolves' starter.
Hofstra struck first in the bottom of the first inning when Will Kennedy plated a run with a double to left center field. Smink settled in and cruised through until the seventh inning when the Pride scored a pair of runs.
With two outs and runners at second and third in the bottom of the seventh inning Hofstra's Dylan Palmer singled up the middle to chase home a pair. Smink nearly escaped the inning without surrendering a run until Palmer plated two with his single. Smink closed out the inning by getting Kennedy to ground into a fielder's choice to complete his outing.
Hofstra added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning with a single through the right side. Stony Brook threatened in the top of the ninth, but Camarda was able to get out of the jam and secure the win.
