No. 6 Women’s Lacrosse Controls Both Ends in Dominant Victory Over Drexel

STONY BROOK, N.Y. -  The No. 6 Stony Brook women's lacrosse (8-2, 3-0 CAA) team held the Drexel Dragons (7-4, 1-2 CAA) scoreless for the first 30 plus minutes of the contest en route to a dominant 15-3 victory at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Seawolves got off to a hot start, scoring their first goal within the first 30 seconds of the game courtesy of junior midfielder Ellie Masera who finished a dime from junior midfielder Jaden Hampel.

Stony Brook kept its foot on the gas as the squad owned the first half of the game, tallying eight goals alone in the first quarter and three in the second quarter. Senior attacker Kailyn Hart exploded for a season-high five goals, three of which came in the first quarter alone.

Senior attacker Morgan Mitchell, Masera, and Hampel all followed behind Hart, registering a hattrick each on the day. Sophomore attacker Courtney Maclay recorded her first career goal when she found the back of the cage with 4:11 left to play in the game to give the Seawolves their 15th and final goal.

The Stony Brook defense did not give Drexel an inch as the unit held the Dragons to just four shots in the first three quarters of the contest. Graduate goalie Hailey Duchnowski stood tall in the cage for the Seawolves as she recorded three saves on only four shots faced in her three quarters of play. Duchnowski only allowed Drexel one goal in 45 minutes of play, a free-position goal with 13:37 left in the third quarter by the Dragons' Hayleigh Simpson.

Stony Brook went on to outshoot Drexel 36-10 to ultimately run away with the 15-3 victory and secure its third consecutive conference win.

QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"I loved the way we came out; we talked about getting off to a good start and I thought our energy was really high. We changed our approach a couple of day leading up to the game, we changed our practice planning; a little less wear and tear on our players and I thought it carried out onto the field. I thought our energy in that first quarter was impressive. When you can hop out and get an eight-goal lead, it starts with the draw and the way we were playing suffocating defense. Those are all great signs, I thought this was one of the better performances, start to finish, we've had all year against a very good team. Their [Drexel] RPI is very high, so we knew the importance of this being an important conference game as well. Credit to our players, I think we have great players who buy into whatever it is that we're trying to establish that week. To be back in front of our fans was important too. To be back here, in this place, we played a little bit more to our identity," said head coach Joe Spallina.

"Some improvements I think is that during practice we were really trying to reiterate how we play and how our offense plays. We shouldn't have to change how we play for another team, so I think we got back to just being Stony Brook and doing what we do best. Whether that be moving around on offense, attacking first on the draw, or getting knock downs on defense," said junior defender Clare Levy.

"So far this season there has been so much travel, and this is our first time finally being able to be in Kenny P, so we just knew that today when we came out for our first home game in a while that we just need to play. We knew that every aspect just needed to play their hardest and it was really successful," said junior midfielder Jaden Hampel.
