Women's Track & Field Sweeps 1500 Meter At Mark Young Invitational; Team Earns Third Overall

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Stony Brook University women's track and field team traveled across the Sound to compete in the Mark Young Invitational at Yale University this afternoon, April 22. The Seawolves earned third-place out of six teams by collecting 94 points, which was 32 behind St. John's University who took first-place. 

Stony Brook had a dominating performance in the 1500 meters, as the squad owned the top five places in the race. Pacing the team was sophomore Grace Weigele taking home the victory and earning 10 points by crossing the finish line at 4:32.47 for her the top spot. 

Coming in right behind Weigele was graduate Samantha Rutt and junior Grace Sisson. Rutt collected eight points for the team by finishing at 4:33.24 in second-place and Sission notched six points after her third-overall finish at 4:36.77. Rounding out the top-five for the team was junior Nicole Garcia in fourth and sophomore Niamh Durcan in fifth by tallying a 4:37.27 and 4:40.91 finish, respectively.

Also earning 10 points for Stony Brook and collecting a victory was junior Alexandria Earle with a score of 1.60 in the high jump. 

The Seawolves had multiple student athletes complete second-place outings. In the 4x100 relay race, the team of graduates Akajia Atkins and Dana Cerbone, senior Aristea Franks, and sophomore Jada Hodge took second by crossing the line at 46.73 for eight points. Also, junior Danella Dawkins finished the 100 meter hurdles at 14.64 and Franks completed the 400 meter race in 56.32, both earning eight points for the team and second-place in the race. 

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Seawolves sent out two different top-three outings in the 800 meter and 400 meter hurdle races. In the 800 meter, graduate Tara Hauff gave her team six points by crossing the finish line at 2:15.86 for third-overall. Then, graduate Siara Guevara also gave the Seawolves six points by completing her race at 1:04.98.  
  • In the 100 meter race, sophomore Jada Hodge took home fourth-place by running a 12.20 to give the Seawolves six points.
  • Cerbone finished in fourth-place for the 200 meters by crossing the finish line at 25.19. 
  • Graduate Cheyenne Baxter Gregory earned a score of 10.32 in the shot-put event, giving the Seawolves a point. 

NEXT UP
Stony Brook is back on the track next weekend (April 27 – April 29) when it travels down to Philadelphia, Pa. to compete in the Penn Relays, the regular season finale for the Seawolves before they travel to the CAA Championships on May 5.
