2023 Spring Game Recap

Offense Tops Defense in 2023 Stony Brook Football Spring Game

4/23/2023 5:45:00 PM

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Football was back at LaValle Stadium on Saturday afternoon as Stony Brook hosted its annual Spring game. The Seawolves split up into "white" and "red" teams and played an offense-defense based intrasquad scrimmage that featured the offense picking up a 21-19 victory.

The offense earned points in the traditional fashion, while a scoring system was in place that allowed the defense to earn points outside of scoring a touchdown or a safety. The defense also received points for the following: a stop prior to the offense crossing the 50-yard line was worth two points, a stop after the offense crossed the 50-yard line was worth one point, three and outs were two points, and turnovers were four points.

Wide receivers Anthony Johnson and RJ Lamarre posted standout games for the Seawolves. Johnson hauled in six passes for a game-high 123 yards, which included a 53-yard reception on the offense's opening drive. Lamarre made three catches for 69 yards and a touchdown.

Transfer quarterback Casey Case went 17-for-25 for 209 yards and two touchdowns through the air. Case connected with Johnson for the 53-yard pitch and catch on the Seawolves' opening drive and then later found wide receiver Jayce Freeman for a five-yard touchdown and Lamarre for 53-yard touchdown.

Freeman capped off the offense's opening drive when he brought in a five-yard touchdown to open the scoring. After several stops by the defense that put them up 18-7, Case found Lamarre for the 53-yard score that cut the deficit to 18-14.

Lamarre corralled a pass that deflected off Joseph Badyna's hands. Lamarre gathered the ball, tucked it in, and darted into the end zone for the touchdown.

The defense went on to pick up a stop before the halftime break which gave them a 19-14 lead. The offense came out of the break and put together a 14-play, 70-yard drive that was finished by Brandon Jorgensen finding Dez Williams for a 20-yard touchdown. After the extra point, the offense took a 21-19 lead, a score they would hold on to win by.

On the defensive side of the ball, JuJu Ganthier led all Seawolves with seven tackles in the game. Fellow corner back Willensky Nicolas was right behind Ganthier as he made five stops on the outside. Clarens Legagneur made three tackles, tallied a TFL, and one PBU.

Taylor Bolesta, Vincent Rotelli, and Jerrod Hills were all credited with sacks in the game. Hashim Desire-Brisard finished with a pair for TFLs up front. Transfer Dyshier Clary recorded two tackles, a TFL, and batted down a pass at the line of scrimmage.
