Fox Shatters Jankowski's Stolen Base Record, Registers Walk-Off Hit Over Iona

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Stony Brook baseball team (16-22, 7-11 CAA) defeated Iona College (9-28, 5-7 MAAC) today in extra-innings after junior Evan Fox drove in sophomore Anthony Gentile to secure the 11-10 victory this afternoon at Joe Nathan Field.

In the first inning, Fox led the game off with a double to left field and proceeded to steal his 79th career bag to tie former alumnus Travis Jankowski for the most stolen bases in program history. Giordano walked in the next at-bat and Fox came in on a wild-pitch. Senior Shane Paradine scorched a single up the middle to give Stony Brook an early 2-0 advantage.

After Iona tallied a run in the second inning, Fox came up in the next half and reached on a fielder's-choice. The speedster wasted no time by stealing second base to reach 80 career stolen bases and surpass the record set by Jankowski in 2012.

Sophomore JT Raab made his first career start this afternoon. Over his 3.0 innings on the hill, the right-hander allowed one run (earned), two hits and struck out two batters. Following the exit of Raab in the fourth, the Gaels and Seawolves would trade runs in throughout the fourth, fifth, and sixth inning as the teams tallied 15 of the 22 runs in the three inning stretch.

Making the most of the pitching change, the Gaels tallied four runs in the frame. But, Paradine answered with a sacrifice-fly RBI in the fourth to cut the deficit to 5-3. Then, the Seawolves responded with three runs in the fifth after Iona scored two runs in their inning. The charge in the fifth was generated by senior Brett Paulsen and Gentile by leading the inning off with a hit and walk. Freshman Matthew Wright drove in Paulsen, Gentile scored on a wild-pitch, and first-year student Johnny Pilla concluded the frame by driving in Wright on a ground-out to make it a 7-6 game.

But in the back-and-forth affair, Iona wouldn't go away without a response. The New York rival would score another two runs in the sixth to go ahead 9-6. The Seawolves didn't shy away from the offensive attacks from the Gaels as they tacked on another three runs in the sixth to tie the game back at 9-9.

Paulsen drove in senior Derek Yalon to get the scoring started and a few batters later, first-year student Johnny Pilla recorded an RBI knock. Ending the rally was Fox launching a ball to right field that allowed Gentile to tie the game and score.

The Gaels re-took the lead in their turn at the dish during the seventh inning on a sacrifice-fly. Senior Devin Sharkey would enter the game out of the pen in the eighth inning looking to stop  the Gaels from scoring for the first time in four innings. The left-hander worked out of trouble after allowing a lead-off knock, Sharkey got a pop-out and his double-play ball to end the eighth.

Then, graduate Jared Bellissimo took the ball for the ninth inning and struck out two batters in the inning to keep the lead for the Gaels at just one run.

Stony Brook made the most of the mistakes by the Gaels in the final innings.
Sophomore Chris Leone led the ninth off by reaching on a hit-by-pitch and later scored after touching the plate on an error-throw by the catcher, sending the game to extra-innings.

After Bellissimo stranded two runners in the 10th inning, Fox came through as the hero by sending home Gentile to allow Stony Brook to take the 11-10 victory at Joe Nathan Field.
