Softball Tops Fordham in Mid-Week Battle

STONY BROOK, N.Y.- The Stony Brook softball team defeated New York foe Fordham, 4-3, in a mid-week battle on Wednesday afternoon at University Field.

The Seawolves got off to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning after sophomore outfielder Alyssa Costello scored on a wild throw by the Rams' catcher who was attempting to stop junior utility Catherine Anne Kupinski from stealing second.

Fordham answered back with a run of its own in the third inning to tie the game 1-1. However, senior infielder Brooke Dye stepped up to the plate in the fourth and smashed a two-run home run to left center to give the squad a 3-1 lead.

The lead did not last for long as the Rams slugged a two-run home run of their own in the fifth inning to, once again, tie the contest. Junior outfielder Alicia Orosco platted the game-winning run in the sixth with a SAC fly to center which allowed senior outfielder Shauna Nuss to score.

STATS AND NOTES
  • Junior outfielder Julianna Sanzone went a perfect 2-2 at the plate and added a run scored.
  • Dye went 1-2 at the dish and recorded her second home run of the season and fourth of her career.
  • Costello recorded a double and added a run scored. She has recorded at least one hit in her last 14 of 15 contests.
  • Junior infielder Sofia Chambers and Kupinski both registered a hit in the game.

QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"I thought it was a good ballgame. It was well played, and I was really happy with how we performed in all three parts of the game, pitching, defense, and offense. We are hitting a little bit of a stride now, probably at the most important time of the year, so it's great to see," said head coach Megan T. Bryant.

"We had no outs, runner on, so I was just trying to hit a ball hard and I happened to hit a homerun. I was actually supposed to bunt in that at bat and then I had two strikes so, again, I was just trying to hit the ball hard and help my team," said senior infielder Brooke Dye on her home run.

"Today I was trying to throw everything out there at them. I did small ball and then I kind of hit away, but they're a good defensive team so they were getting me out a lot. But, then in that approach I was just thinking try to be small but I knew she kept throwing the rise so I just need to get my hands at it and I did that and it was productive," said junior outfielder Alicia Orosco on her game-winning SAC fly.
