Softball Topped by Delaware in Friday Doubleheader

NEWARK, Del. – The Stony Brook softball team fell to Delaware in both games of a doubleheader on Friday afternoon in Newark, Delaware. The Seawolves were narrowly edged by the Blue Hens in game one, 1-0, they were then defeated by Delaware, 5-2, in game two.
 
Senior pitcher Ashton Melaas and Blue Hens' starter Emily Winburn were locked in a pitchers' duel in game one. Both starters went the distance, but Winburn came out with the win as she tossed a complete game three-hit shutout.
 
Melaas surrendered just one run (earned) over six innings of work and struck out four. Delaware got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning when Jayla Brooks singled in the only run of the game, which proved to be the difference. The Blue Hens held on to take game one behind Winburn in the circle and Brooks' fourth inning RBI single.
 
Delaware jumped on the board early in game two as it plated all five runs over the first three innings. The Blue Hens scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first when Brittney Mendoza brought home a run with a sacrifice fly. They added four runs in the bottom of the third inning thanks to a two-run single by Mendoza, an RBI single by Chloe Blantz, and a sacrifice fly by Brooks.
 
Stony Brook scored its first runs of the day in the top of the fourth inning when freshman infielder Naiah Ackerman brought home a pair with a single to center field. Ackerman's two-run single plated senior catcher Corinne Badger and junior utility Catherine Anne Kupinski.
 

 
Delaware's starter Taylor Wroten settled in after Ackerman's two-run single and held the Seawolves off the board for the remainder of the game. Wroten went the distance and secured the 5-2 victory for the Blue Hens.
 
GAME 1: STONY BROOK – 0, DELAWARE – 1
  • Melaas tossed her fifth complete game of the season as she went 6.0 innings and allowed one run (earned) on eight hits. She struck out four and walked none. It was the 15th time this season that she allowed one earned run or fewer in an outing.
  • Sophomore outfielder Alyssa Costello went 2-3 at the dish with a pair of singles. It marked her sixth multi-hit game of the season.
  • Ackerman was 1-2 with a single and a sacrifice bunt.  
GAME 2: STONY BROOK – 2, DELAWARE – 5
  • Ackerman went 1-3 with a two-run single. It was her second multi-RBI game of the season and first since she knocked in three runs at Drexel on March 26.
  • Junior Mia Haynes got the start in the circle for Stony Brook and tossed her eighth complete game of the season. Haynes went 6.0 innings allowed five runs (earned) on seven hits. She struck out one and walked six.
  • Junior outfielder Alicia Orosco went 1-4 at the plate with a triple. It was her first triple of the season and first since she hit a three-bagger against Yale on March 5, 2022.
  • Sophomore infielder Ashley Jacobson went 1-2 with a double.
NEXT UP
Stony Brook is back on the field tomorrow against Delaware for the finale of the three-game series. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m., and the game is set to broadcast on FloSoftball.
