NEWARK, Del – The Stony Brook softball team was narrowly edged by Delaware, 3-2, in the final game of the series on Saturday afternoon.
Senior pitcher
Ashton Melaas got the start in the circle for the Seawolves while Emily Winburn got the start for the Blue Hens. Both pitchers went the distance, but it was Winburn that came out on top.
Delaware came out strong and was able to record the first run of the contest in the bottom of the fourth inning when Brittney Mendoza singled to right field to plate Hanna Garber. The Blue Hens added to their 1-0 lead when Julz Garber stole home.
Stony Brook did not stay silent for long as sophomore outfielder
Alyssa Costello reached on a fielding error by the second baseman which allowed senior catcher
Corinne Badger to score. Delaware responded with a run of its own in the bottom of the sixth, increasing their led to 3-1.
The Seawolves fought back in the final inning. Freshman infielder
Naiah Ackerman singled to right field to bring home junior outfielder
Alicia Orosco and cut the deficit to 3-2. However, it would not be enough as Delaware struck out Stony Brook's final batter to secure the 3-2 victory.
STATS AND NOTES
- Ackerman went 1-3 at the plate and recorded the only RBI for the Seawolves.
- Orosco went 2-4 at the dish, tallying her second-consecutive triple. The junior also added a run scored.
- Badger also went 2-4 and registered a run scored.
- Ashley Jacobson and Costello both added a hit in the contest.
- Melaas tossed her sixth complete game of the season as she went 6.0 innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits. She struck out four and walked none.
NEXT UP
Stony Brook returns to the diamond on Thursday, April 13 when it travels to Riverdale, N.Y. to take on Manhattan College in a mid-week doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
