PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – In a contest that saw six lead changes and 11 ties, the Stony Brook men's lacrosse team came up short, 15-14, in overtime to Drexel on Saturday afternoon at Vidas Field.
Graduate attacker
Jonathan Huber led the charge for the Seawolves, tallying a season high five goals. Graduate midfielder
Matt Anderson kept his hot streak rolling recording a hat trick on the day. Junior midfielder
Noah Armitage and senior attacker
Dylan Pallonetti added a pair of goals each.
The Dragons wasted no time getting on the board after the first whistle. Within the first 40 seconds Drexel's Jack Mulcahy found the back of the cage. However, the 1-0 lead would be short lived as Anderson would find the back of the net himself to tie the game at 1-1.
On the next possession, the Dragons would answer back courtesy of Zach Augustine to take back control of the contest. With 9:48 left to play in the first quarter, Armitage converted a man-up goal off an assist from Pallonetti to tie the match up once again, this time at 2-2.
Stony Brook and Drexel took turns exchanging blows for the remainder of the first quarter, but both squads would go into the quarter break tied at 4-4. The start of the second quarter was a defensive battle as neither team found the cage until Anderson scored with 10:45 remaining. The next score of the quarter would come from Huber to extend the Seawolves' lead to 6-4, it's largest margin of the contest.
The Dragons were able to come back and tie the game at 6-6, but senior attacker
Will Button would secure his 12
th goal of the season within the last two minutes of the half to give the squad a 7-6 lead heading into halftime. Senipr
Renz Conlon set the tone for Stony Brook coming out of the break after winning the face-off and driving down the field for a goal to extend the lead back to two.
For the remaining two quarters, both squads would go back-and-forth taking control of the lead. After the end of regulation, Drexel and Stony Brook found themselves knotted up at 14-14 to force overtime. QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"I'm devastated for our guys, they fought and battled all game. We knew this was two evenly matched teams and in the end we left a lot of plays on the field that added up to us losing. We need to learn from our mistakes and get ready for an extremely talented Delaware team on Saturday. CAA games are physical and mental battles and we have to capitalize on our chance to earn wins in this league," said head coach
Anthony Gilardi.
