STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Stony Brook baseball (19-27, 10-14 CAA) fell late in their final non-conference matchup Wednesday afternoon, dropping the game 9-5 against Sacred Heart (21-26, 15-12 NEC) at Joe Nathan Field.
Senior pitcher,
Eric Foster started the game on the mound for the Seawolves and shined in three scoreless innings. In his one run through the lineup, Foster gave up just one hit, no walks, and had one strikeout.
Junior
Evan Fox led off the Seawolves' offensive day with a walk, followed by steals of second and third base.
Shane Paradine drove in Fox with a ground out to third, giving Stony Brook the early 1-0 lead after one.
Paradine came up clutch once more just two innings later as he drove in Fox in the bottom of the third with a sacrifice fly to extend Stony Brook's lead to 2-0.
Foster's pitching day ended as junior
Brendan Pattermann came in to start the fourth inning. After a leadoff Sacred Heart single by Justin Jordan, the Pioneers' Ryan Donnelly tied the game at two with a two-run homer.
However, Stony Brook answered and took the lead right back. Senior
Derek Yalon led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a walk and then stole second base. He scored shortly after as sophomore
Chris Leone drove him in on an infield single.
The Seawolves extended their lead in the bottom of the fifth as senior
Brett Paulsen drove in two runs with a ground-rule double to give the Seawolves a 5-2 advantage.
The sixth inning was one of just three scoreless innings in today's ballgame. However, in the bottom half, Fox stole his third base of the game and 34
th of the season.
In the top half of the seventh, the tides changed quickly. Freshman
Sadier Vicioso started the inning in relief of
Cade Thompson. Sacred Heart loaded the bases with two outs and began its rally.
Justin Jordan hit a flyball that got lost in the sun in right-center field and dropped in and went to the wall. All three runners on base were able to come home along with Jordan for an inside the park grand slam.
Following a scoreless eighth inning out of the pen by graduate
Kyle Johnson, the Seawolves relinquished three more runs in the top of the ninth and fell to the Pioneers, 9-5.
STATS AND NOTES
- Fox stole his 34th base of the season. Placing him second all-time in SBU history for stolen bases in a single-season.
- Giordano tallied his team-leading 18th double of the season and went 2-5 at the plate today.
- Foster started the first three innings of the game without allowing a run and struck out a batter. This was his sixth appearance of the season, and he recorded a season-high in innings pitched.
- The Seawolves are now 17-6 all-time against the Pioneers.
- Stony Brook is now 6-4 in midweek non-conference games this season.
UP NEXT
The Seawolves will return to Joe Nathan Field this Mother's Day weekend to take on Monmouth in a three-game set. The matchup on Friday is set for 3 p.m., Saturday is set for 1 p.m., while Sunday's first pitch is slated for 12 p.m.
