STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Stony Brook baseball team picked up its second win in as many days over Monmouth as it defeated the Hawks, 8-3. With the win, the Seawolves clinched the series victory over the Hawks and look to secure the three-game sweep on Sunday afternoon.
In the win, junior
Evan Fox swiped his 36
th base of the season as he stole third in the bottom of the eighth inning. With the steal, Fox tied Stony Brook Hall of Famer and current member of the Texas Rangers, Travis Jankowski for the Seawolves' single-season record for stolen bases with 36. Jankowski accomplished the feat in the historic 2012 season.
Stony Brook received a standout pitching performance from senior starter
Josh O'Neill. O'Neill tossed 7.0 stellar innings and allowed three runs, all earned, and struck out five. The senior surrendered just four hits as he earned his sixth victory of the season and second in his last three outings.
After Monmouth plated a run in the top of the second inning on an RBI ground out, the Seawolves put up a four-spot in the bottom half of the frame. Senior
Brett Paulsen drove in senior outfielder
Derek Yalon with a double to right center. Sophomore
Matt Miceli followed up with a double of his own that brought Paulsen home.
Later in the inning Fox brought home a pair with a two-run single to left. Fox's single chased in Micheli and Miceli. Stony Brook added a run in the bottom of the third when Yalon came home on a wild pitch to put the Seawolves up 5-1.
The Seawolves added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth to go ahead 8-1. Fox launched a solo home run to left with one out. Yalon drilled a triple to right center to bring home senior
Shane Paradine and graduate
Evan Giordano.
Monmouth mounted a rally in the top of the seventh as it scored two runs on a two-run single by Will Trochiano. O'Neill got out of the jam in the seventh inning by getting the next batter to fly out to Yalon in center field to end the inning.
Graduate
Kyle Johnson closed the door for the Seawolves as he pitched 2.0 innings and gave up just one hit to finish the game and secure Stony Brook's 8-3 win.
