STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Stony Brook softball team (25-25, 10-13 CAA) earned their fifth straight conference win and the series sweep over Monmouth University (10-34, 8-16 CAA) after defeating the Hawks 9-1 in six innings.
For the second day in a row, senior Corinne Badger was the hero for the Seawolves. The catcher went 3-3 with four RBI, including her CAA-leading 14th home run of the season and the game-winning knock in the sixth.
The Seawolves wasted no time with their offensive attack and tallied three runs in the first inning. Leading the two-out rally was sophomore Alyssa Costello and junior Ashley Jacobson tallying knocks. Jacobson brought in Costello and then Badger sent in Jacobson with a home run to left field, giving Stony Brook the 3-0 advantage.
Stony Brook sent out senior Ashton Melaas to make her 23rd start of the season. The right-hander earned her ninth win of the season after tossing the complete 6.0 innings, allowing three hits and just one run (earned).
Following a run by the Hawks in the third, the Seawolves answered with two runs of their own to go up 5-1. It was the top of the order again doing the damage for the squad. Senior Shauna Nuss got on by hitting a triple in the gap, and Costello brought her in on an RBI double to left center.
Badger capped the inning off with a single to center field to give the Seawolves the 5-1 advantage. On the hill, Melaas would settle in and retire 9 of the final 10 batters that she faced.
In the sixth inning, the Seawolves sent seven batters to the plate and tallied three runs to give themselves the 9-1 victory in the sixth inning due to the run-rule.
Jacobson notched a two-RBI single and Badger recorded her second walk-off hit in her last three games by bringing home Nuss.
Before the game, Stony Brook honored their senior class, Brooke Dye, Corinne Badger, Ashton Melaas, and Shauna Nuss, who have made lasting impacts on the program over the course of their careers. Their hard work, dedication, and contributions have and always will be greatly appreciated.
