HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The Stony Brook softball team made history on Tuesday afternoon, defeating Charleston, 5-3, in the first round of the program's first CAA Tournament appearance at Bill Edwards Stadium.
The Cougars struck first with a single up the middle to take an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. However, the Seawolves did not stay silent for long as sophomore outfielder
Alyssa Costello doubled down the right field line to plate junior outfielder
Alicia Orosco and tie the game at 1-1 in the third inning.
Junior infielder
Ashley Jacobson kept the momentum rolling in the third for the squad with a SAC fly to center which allowed Costello to score and gave Stony Brook its first lead of the contest. Charleston did not back down, plating two runs in the bottom of the third courtesy of a single to left by junior Shealyn Starks which gave the Cougars a 3-2 lead.
In the fifth inning, freshman infielder
Naiah Ackerman reached on a throwing error by Charleston's thirdbaseman. The error allowed Jacobson and Costello to score, giving the squad control of a 4-3 lead. In the seventh, senior catcher
Corinne Badger gave the Seawolves an insurance run, scoring on a wild pitch to secure the 5-3 victory for Stony Brook.
STATS AND NOTES
- Costello went 2-3 at the plate in her first postseason appearance. She knocked a double which allowed Orosco to score and added two runs scored.
- Senior infielder Brooke Dye also went 2-3 at the dish, marking the fifth multi-hit game for Dye this season.
- Ackerman recorded two hits in the contest which also marked her fifth multi-hit game of the season.
- Jacobson went 1-3 and registered a RBI and a run scored. She has now reached base safely in her last five of six outings.
- Julianna Sanzone, Catherine Anne Kupinski, and Orosco all added a hit in the game. Orosco also added a run scored.
- Junior Mia Haynes stood tall in the circle for the Seawolves. Haynes went the distance, scattering eight hits and only allowing three earned runs. She also tossed six strikeouts en route to the win.

The Seawolves will return to the diamond tomorrow to take on Hofstra in the second round of the CAA Tournament. First pitch is slated for 2:30 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live on FloSoftball.
