Softball Defeats Charleston in First Round of CAA Tournament

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The Stony Brook softball team made history on Tuesday afternoon, defeating Charleston, 5-3, in the first round of the program's first CAA Tournament appearance at Bill Edwards Stadium.

The Cougars struck first with a single up the middle to take an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. However, the Seawolves did not stay silent for long as sophomore outfielder Alyssa Costello doubled down the right field line to plate junior outfielder Alicia Orosco and tie the game at 1-1 in the third inning.

Junior infielder Ashley Jacobson kept the momentum rolling in the third for the squad with a SAC fly to center which allowed Costello to score and gave Stony Brook its first lead of the contest. Charleston did not back down, plating two runs in the bottom of the third courtesy of a single to left by junior Shealyn Starks which gave the Cougars a 3-2 lead.

In the fifth inning, freshman infielder Naiah Ackerman reached on a throwing error by Charleston's thirdbaseman. The error allowed Jacobson and Costello to score, giving the squad control of a 4-3 lead. In the seventh, senior catcher Corinne Badger gave the Seawolves an insurance run, scoring on a wild pitch to secure the 5-3 victory for Stony Brook.
