NEWARK, Del. – For the second day in a row, the Stony Brook baseball team (19-26, 10-14 CAA) jumped out to an early lead against the University of Delaware baseball team (24-24, 13-11 CAA) but ultimately dropped the series finale against the Blue Hens 10-7.
Freshman
Eddie Smink made his seventh start of the season, which leads all first-year students on the squad. The right-hander was dealing early by retiring six of the first seven hitters that he faced with five punch outs.
After Smink retired the final batter in the second inning on a strike out, the Seawolves would rally to three runs with one swing of the bat by junior
Evan Fox.
Junior
Ryan Micheli drew a one-out walk and freshman
Matthew Wright flipped the lineup over by launching a double to right-center. Fox came to the plate and launched his sixth home run of the year to give Stony Brook an early 3-0 advantage.
Following a scoreless frame by Smink in the third, the Seawolves scored another run in the fourth to take a 4-0 lead. Senior
Brett Paulsen sent a moonshot to left field for his second home run of the season and fourth of his career.
In the next half, Delaware would find their success at the plate and score three runs in the inning to take a 4-3 lead. But, Smink continued to keep his composure through the fifth and sixth inning by retiring six of the next seven batters that he faced. However, the Blue Hens would make the most of a pitching change in the bottom of the seventh by tallying three runs to go up 6-4.
The Seawolves wouldn't go away without a fight. In the next half, the team sent all nine batters to the plate and registered three runs to take the lead back.
Leading the charge was junior
Matt Brown-Eiring launching his second home run of the weekend and the 20th of his career to cut the deficit to one.
After senior
Derek Yalon reached on a single, Paulsen tied the game up with a double to right-center that allowed Yalon to score. Giving the Seawolves the 7-6 lead was Micheli knocking a single to left that brought home Paulsen.
The Blue Hens again took advantage of the Seawolves bullpen and scored four runs in the eighth to ultimately take the 10-7 victory.
