RICHMOND, Va. – The Stony Brook softball team had two student athletes recognized by the conference office this morning as sophomore
Alyssa Costello garnered All-Conference First Team honors and freshman
Naiah Ackerman was selected to the All-Rookie Team.
Costello, an outfielder from Lanoka Harbor, New Jersey, was selected to an All-Conference team for the second time of her career after collecting the America East All-Conference Second Team last season. She was also an All-Rookie team selection during their final season in the America East last year.
After bursting onto the Island with her team-high .375 batting average, the sophomore led the team with a .378 average this season. For the CAA, she was second in average and slugging percentage (.651). Also, she ranked fifth in RBI (34) and home runs (8), sixth in hits (55), and 10th in the league with 11 doubles.
On March 26, Costello exploded for five RBI which was a career-high and a season-high for the Seawolves. On May 1st, Costello was tabbed for the first time in her career as the CAA Player of the week. In the four games during the week, the outfielder batted .471 (8-17) and posted a .500 on-base percentage with four runs scored and an RBI to lead the Seawolves to 3-1 week, including the series victory over Towson. Costello has a team-best 16 multi-hit games this season and led the squad with 10 multi-RBI games. She is currently riding an 18 game hitting streak which is the longest on the team this season.
Ackerman was selected to the All-Rookie team after she finished her conference season with a .288 average in her 20 starts. This season, Ackerman led all first-year students on the team in hits (17), RBI (11), and home runs (2).
In the game one victory over Drexel on March 26, Ackerman tallied a career-best three RBI, a home run and tallied two hits in the 4-0 victory. The native of Colorado had her longest on-base streak of the season after reaching bases in six straight games from April 7 to April 13. The freshman had four multi-hit games this season and tallied two games this season with multi-RBI.
Costello and Ackerman are the first student-athletes in program history to receive CAA All-Conference accolades.
The Seawolves head to Hempstead to compete in the CAA Tournament. The squad enters as the No. 7 seed and will play the No. 6 seed College of Charleston Cougars in the first round on Tuesday, May 9
