Chuck Priore have named four student-athletes in defensive lineman
Taylor Bolesta, linebacker
Aidan Kaler, wide receiver R.J. Lamarre and tight end
Cal Redman its football captains for the 2023 season.
"This group of four captains earned the opportunity mostly with their off-the-field presence in the classroom and the weight room as well as their playing ability," Priore said. "Each player has a different thing they will bring to the table. We've got three homegrown guys and one transfer as captains. I'm excited about this group and its leadership"
Bolesta was selected after finishing with 22 tackles, seven TFLs, 0.5 sacks and a fumble recovery during the 2022 season, leading to his selection as Preseason Fourth Team All-CAA by Phil Steele. He also received the program's first Joe Feminella Award, which is given in honor of Feminella's presence with the team across 13 seasons as he battled a pediatric brain tumor. Bolesta will wear Feminella's #10 during the 2023 season.
Joining Bolesta as a front-seven captain, Kaler recorded 60 tackles, 5.5 TFLs and a sack in 2022, contributing two fumble recoveries in the turnover game. He is the leading returning tackler for the Seawolves in 2023. The Sayville, N.Y. native grabbed Honorable Mention All-CAA honors and joined Bolesta as a Phil Steele Fourth Team pick in the preseason.
Lamarre returns for his fifth season at Stony Brook, having played all 11 games in 2021 and 2022. He caught 20 passes for 232 yards in 2022 to lead all returning receivers and added a touchdown last season. Priore noted Lamarre's journey from walk-on to team captain throughout his Stony Brook career.
The redshirt junior Redman caught three passes for 25 yards while also contributing in the blocking game across his 10 appearances in 2022. This followed another three catches for 32 yards in 2021.
