TOWSON, Md. --The Stony Brook women's basketball team shot 50 percent from deep and Gigi Gonzalez tallied 30 points on the way to a 77-65 victory over the Towson Tigers on the road Friday evening for their eighth consecutive victory, moving themselves to 3-0 in the CAA.
The Seawolves (13-1, 3-0) had four players score in double figures, led by Gigi Gonzalez, who had 30 points and six rebounds. Sherese Pittman tacked on 14 points and two steals and Khari Clark chipped in as well with a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Also, Stony Brook pulled down 40 rebounds in Friday's game, led by Clark's 10 boards.
Stony Brook forced 15 Towson turnovers, as they turned the takeaways into 12 points on the other end of the floor. Pittman's two steals led the way for Stony Brook.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After falling behind 22-14, Stony Brook went on a 5-0 run with 35 seconds left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Pittman, to narrow its deficit to 22-19, a score that would hold for the rest of the period. G. Gonzalez led the way with eight points in the opening frame and Z. Gonzlaez tallied five points.
Towson kept adding to that lead, building a 37-30 advantage before Stony Brook went on a 5-0 run to end the half, highlighted by a bucket from Janay Brantley, to narrow its deficit to 37-35, a score that would hold until halftime. The Seawolves did grab their first lead of the game at 24-22 in the second quarter following a three by Victoria Keenan.
After halftime, Stony Brook kept the Tigers from growing their lead before going on a 9-0 run, punctuated by a three from Gonzalez, to grab a 52-45 lead with 2:20 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Tigers had cut into that lead, but the Seawolves still entered the fourth quarter with a 54-52 edge. Stony Brook knocked down four three-pointers in the quarter to score 12 of its 19 total points.
Towson proceeded to take a 65-64 lead before Stony Brook went on a 13-0 run to seize a 77-65 lead with 19 seconds to go in the contest, a score which would hold for the rest of the game. Leading the run for the Seawolves was G. Gonzalez who scored 11 of the final 13 points to end the game for the squad. Also, Stony Brook got up and down the court quickly in the quarter, scoring six fast break points.
STATS AND NOTES
- The Seawolves made half of their attempts from three point range, knocking down nine of 18 shots. The 50% from deep by the Seawolves marked a new season-best.
- The Seawolves held the Tigers to only 38.8 percent shooting from the field.
- Stony Brook had a 40-34 edge on the boards in the win.
- The Stony Brook defense forced 15 turnovers.
- Four players scored double figures for the Seawolves (Clark, G. Gonzalez, Z. Gonzalez, and Pittman).
- Gigi Gonzalez led the Seawolves with a game-high and career-high 30 points. She is the first Seawolf to score 30 points this season and the most since Annie Warren scored 30 against Charleston last season on Feb. 17, 2023.
- Stony Brook got a game-high 10 rebounds from Khari Clark and also tallied 10 points for her fifth double-double of the season.
- Brantley led the team with eight points off the bench, while Keenan tallied five.
- Stony Brook is 11-0 this season when they score 70 or more points.
- The Seawolves are 5-0 this season when four or more student athletes finish in double figures.
- Stony Brook is now 2-2 all-time against Towson.

Stony Brook will return to the court on Sunday, to take on Delaware at their place, beginning at 2:00 pm. The Seawolves are 0-4 all-time against the Blue Hens, as they were defeated in their last matchup on Feb. 26, 2023 at The Island, 53-51. The game will be streamed live on FloHoops.
