Seawolves Can't Overcome Bulldogs' Fast Start, Fall to Yale

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Stony Brook men's basketball could not overcome a hot start by Yale on Wednesday evening, falling to the Bulldogs, 86-64.

The Seawolves had two players score in double figures, led by Joe Octave, who had 18 points, six rebounds and three blocks. CJ Luster tacked on 16 points and Collin O'Connor added four points and five assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Yale came out firing on all cylinders offensively, connecting on eight of its first 11 field goals to build a 19-4 lead less than six minutes into the contest.
  • The fast start for the visitors, coupled with a slow start (3-15 FG) on the Stony Brook side, found the Seawolves facing a 32-10 deficit with eight minutes to play in the first half.
  • The Bulldogs' first-half lead grew as large as 27 points, 37-10, with 7:15 remaining. Yale had made 15 of its first 20 shots to build the sizable advantage.
  • After Yale cooled off, Stony Brook made six of its next seven shot attempts to bring the deficit down to 16 points with three minutes left in the half.
  • Yale pushed the lead back to 20 points, 48-28, heading into the half.
  • The Bulldogs made their first four shots of the second half to open up a 27-point lead again before Stony Brook went on a 6-0 run, finished off by Ben Wight's layup, to shrink the deficit to 57-36 with 15:28 to go in the contest.
  • Yale responded once more and maintained control down the stretch, closing out a 22-point victory over the Seawolves.

STATS AND NOTES

  • The Seawolves made half of their attempts from three point range, knocking down nine of 18 shots.
  • The Seawolves recorded an assist on 73 percent of made field goals.
  • Octave paced the Seawolves' offense with 18 points. He added a team-high six rebounds.
  • Yale finished the first half shooting 52.8% (19-36) from the field and 61.5% (8-13) from beyond the arc. The Bulldogs finished the contest shooting 50.7 percent.
  • The Bulldogs out-rebounded Stony Brook, 44-31, including finishing with a 13-5 edge on the offensive glass.
  • Yale has now won five of the last six meetings and three straight over Stony Brook. The Bulldogs lead the all-time series 5-1.
