Despite Four Scorers Reaching Double Figures, Seawolves Drop Road Contest at Columbia

NEW YORK, N.Y. — The Stony Brook men's basketball team was defeated by Columbia, 82-63, on Saturday evening at Levien Gymnasium in New York City. Four players scored in double-figures for the Seawolves, but Columbia's Geronimo Rubio De La Rosa scored 37 points to power the Lions past Stony Brook.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Columbia raced out to a 9-0 advantage early on, holding Stony Brook without a point for nearly four minutes to begin the contest.
  • The Lions built a 17-3 lead before a triple from CJ Luster just over seven minutes into the game pushed the deficit back to 11 points at the 12:57 mark of the first half.
  • The Seawolves' deficit grew to 17 points again, but an 11-2 Stony Brook run made it a seven-point game, 35-28, in the final minute of the half. A Rubio De La Rosa trifecta stood as the final basket of the opening 20 minutes, sending Stony Brook into the locker room with a 10-point disadvantage.
  • Stony Brook hung around to start the second half, but Columbia provided a response for each basket to keep the distance between the two sides at double digits.
  • A 12-0 run by Columbia padded the lead to 25 points. Stony Brook's deficit reached 33 points with 7:54 to play after a 22-2 run by the Lions.
  • Stony Brook ended the final five-plus minutes of action by outscoring Columbia 19-6, falling 82-63.

QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"Credit to Columbia. We struggled tonight to stop [Geronimo] Rubio De La Rosa, who had a fantastic game," head coach Geno Ford said. "We have a quick turnaround and have to head on the road to face another quality opponent in Brown. We will need to get ready for another tough road test."
