Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Seawolves Comeback Falls Short as Harvard Emerges Victorious

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Stony Brook women's basketball team put together a come-from-behind effort in the second half, but Harvard ultimately pulled away in the final minutes to secure a 60-51 win on Wednesday afternoon on Long Island.

It was a complete team effort for Stony Brook as Dallysshya Moreno pulled down a team-high 12 rebounds, tacking on five points for the Seawolves as Zaida Gonzalez led the team with 13 points, four rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Breauna Ware chipped in for 11 points and six rebounds, while Shamarla King and Janay Brantley each added eight points.

Moreno tacked on five points to her 12-rebound game for the Seawolves (3-3). Zaida Gonzalez helped out with 13 points, four assists and two steals and Breauna Ware chipped in with 11 points and six rebounds.

Led by Moreno's three offensive rebounds, Stony Brook did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 11 boards that resulted in seven second chance points.

The Seawolves' defense held Harvard to only 35 percent shooting from the field and limited Harmoni Turner, Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Preseason Watch List recipient, to 1-of-14 shooting and six points in the game.

The Crimson did not have much luck cleaning up their misses on the offensive glass either, as they finished with seven offensive rebounds and managed seven second chance points while Stony Brook cleared 32 defensive rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED

After jumping out to an 8-6 advantage, Stony Brook went on a 6-0 run with 5:25 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Chloe Oliver, to increase its lead to 14-6. The Seawolves then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 16-11 advantage. Stony Brook did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring eight points close to the basket.

The Seawolves could not maintain their lead in the second quarter as the Crimson went on a 13-0 run with 5:53 left in the half before Stony Brook was able to piece together some shots but came up short to enter halftime trailing, 33-25.

Harvard continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 39-29 advantage before Stony Brook went on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a three from Brantley, to trim its deficit to 39-36 with 2:55 to go in the third. Harvard countered and stretched its lead to 44-36 heading into the fourth. Stony Brook knocked down two three-pointers in the quarter to score six of its 11 total points.

Stony Brook came out of the third quarter break clicking on all cylinders, going on a 12-0 run, finished off by Ware's layup, to seize a 48-44 lead with 6:04 to go in the contest. Harvard re-asserted control, outscoring the Seawolves 16-3 the rest of the way to hand Stony Brook the 60-51 loss.
