NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Stony Brook women's basketball team received double-digit performances from Breauna Ware and Zaida Gonzalez, but the Seawolves fell to Ivy League foe, Columbia, 87-47, on Schiller Court at Levien Gymasium on Monday evening.
Ware led the squad with 12 points, while Gonzalez tacked on 11 points and three steals and
Janay Brantley added nine points, six rebounds and three steals.
The Stony Brook defense was a problem in Monday's game, forcing 13 Columbia turnovers. Those takeaways turned into nine points on the offensive end of the floor as Brantley's three steals led the way individually for the Seawolves.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Stony Brook came out hot to start the game with five straight points from Gonzalez, before Columbia found their momentum and went on a 9-0 run behind a struggling Seawolves defense.
Chloe Oliver and
Dallysshya Moreno each hit a layup, along with one free throw from
Shamarla King through the final minutes of the quarter to fall behind, 23-10.
The Seawolves continued to lose ground in the second quarter, despite Ware scoring six points with Gonzalez adding a pair of free throws and King recording a bucket, Stony Brook still faced a 35-20 halftime deficit.
Columbia continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 56-26 advantage before Stony Brook went on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Gonzalez, to trim its deficit to 56-33 with 2:03 to go in the third. Stony Brook played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 15 points in the paint, thanks to Brantley, Gonzalez, and Ware.
Stony Brook could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 87-47. Stony Brook continued to take advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring eight of its 12 points in the paint.
The New York schools went head-to-head for the 14

QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"Tough one for us tonight but credit to Columbia as they are a very good team," stated head coach Joy McCorvey. "This was a great test to start the season, and we will learn from this and move on. There were a lot of controllable areas that we will continue to focus on and work towards improving. It's the first game and there's a lot of season to be played. We will get after it again tomorrow with film and practice and be ready to go Thursday."
