Men's Basketball Falls After Last-Second Shot at Hofstra

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - The Stony Brook University men's basketball team fell to Hofstra, 72-71, on Thursday night at the Mack Center. Aaron Clarke (18 points) and Tyler Stephenson-Moore (17 points) led Stony Brook offensively, but a last-second shot sunk the Seawolves in the end.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Stony Brook started off scorching hot, connecting on seven of its 10 three-point attempts over the opening 11 minutes of action. The hot shooting helped the Seawolves build a nine-point lead and an 8-0 run, bookended by a Dean Noll steal and score, put Stony Brook ahead by double figures and forced a Hofstra timeout.

The Pride fought back, pulling within two possessions of the Seawolves, but a 6-0 run stretched the lead back to 12 points. Sabry Philip's dunk accounted for Stony Brook's final basket of the half, entering the locker room with a 41-31 advantage in Nassau County.

Hofstra battled back to start the second half, trimming its double-digit deficit to single figures just five minutes into the second stanza. Stony Brook cooled off offensively, allowing the Pride to claw back into it. The Seawolves saw its lead evaporate after a 14-6 Hofstra run, falling behind 59-58 with 5:24 to play. Stephenson-Moore made a pair of baseline jumpers to put the Seawolves back in front by three points as the game entered the final four minutes.

The final two minutes of play featured five lead changes, but it was Hofstra's Tyler Thomas who provided the dagger with a fall-away shot that fell with four-tenths of a second remaining. Stephenson-Moore's last second heave missed and the Seawolves ultimately came up short in this season's second iteration of the Battle of Long Island.
