Softball Falls to SEMO to Close Out Felsberg Invitational

MIAMI, Fla. - The Stony Brook University softball team dropped its final contest of the FIU Felsberg Invitational to Southeast Missouri, 5-4, on Sunday morning. Catherine Anne Kupinski picked up a pair of runs batted in and Gabrielle Maday tossed four innings of hitless relief in the loss.

SEMO 5 - STONY BROOK 4
  • Kupinski plated a pair of runners to open the scoring in the first inning, her second and third RBIs of the season, tying her with Corinne Badger for the early team lead.
  • After the Red Hawks tied the game, the Seawolves re-took the lead on a bases-loaded walk drawn by Badger in the second. Stony Brook loaded the bases with nobody out to start the second, but managed just the one run on the free pass.
  • Staked to her second lead of the morning, Ashton Melaas, making her first start of the season, allowed a three-run homer in the bottom of the third.
  • Maday entered in relief of Melaas, retiring the next three batters in order, notching a pair of punchouts.
  • Emily Reinstein reached base for the second time in the contest to start the fourth, eventually coming around to score on an Alyssa Costello sacrifice fly to make it a one-run game again. With the tying run on second, Badger lined out to third to end the frame.
  • Maday finished out the contest in the circle, facing one batter over the minimum in her four innings of relief work. She allowed just one base runner, committing an error in the seventh, registering three strikeouts over four hitless innings.

STATS AND NOTES
  • Badger extended her on-base streak to nine straight games, dating back to last season.
  • The Seawolves were 2-11 (.182) with runners on base today, as well as 2-10 (.200) with runners in scoring position and 1-5 (.200) with the bases loaded.
  • Stony Brook closes out the opening weekend of the season at 1-4 overall, picking up its lone win on Friday over Ohio State. The win against the Buckeyes was the first in program history and it marked the second straight season that the Seawolves knocked off a power-conference team in non-conference play.

QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"We played a solid and better all-around game today, which was great to see, but it was a winnable game. We had runners on base in good scoring opportunities and didn't capitalize enough on those. That was the difference in the game," head coach Megan T. Bryant said. "Our defensive effort was excellent and the pitchers gave us a chance. We were fortunate to play very good competition this weekend and it will pay off for us."

UP NEXT
The Seawolves return to action at the UMBC Round Robin Tournament in Baltimore, Md. on Feb. 17 and 18. Stony Brook will play two games each day, facing Morgan State and UMBC on Saturday and Morgan State and Holy Cross on Sunday. The weekend tournament will stream live on America East TV.
