Badger and Kupinski Power Seawolves to Split on Day One of Libby Matson Tournament

STOCKTON, Calif. - The Stony Brook University softball team split on day one of the Libby Matson Tournament, falling to Nevada before topping Pacific. Corinne Badger and Catherine Anne Kupinski blasted three-run homers to power the Seawolves to a win in the nightcap on the west coast.

GAME 1: NEVADA 12 - STONY BROOK 0 (5 INN.)
  • Gabrielle Maday started in the circle for the Seawolves, conceding a run in the first frame.
  • Nevada struck for eight runs in the second, chasing Maday. Ashton Melaas entered in relief and struck out the first batter she faced to end the inning.
  • Melaas allowed a pair of runs in the third, seeing Stony Brook fall behind 11-0.
  • Alyssa Costello represented the Seawolves' lone baserunner through the first three innings, reaching base after being hit by a pitch. She singled in the fourth to notch Stony Brook's first hit of the contest.
  • After a Kupinski single later in the frame, Nevada stranded a pair of Seawolves on the bases.
  • After two quick outs in the bottom half of the fourth, a throwing error followed by a two-bagger pushed across another run for the Wolf Pack.

GAME 2: STONY BROOK 7 - PACIFIC 6
  • Costello was hit by a pitch in the first inning for the second time on the day. She advanced to scoring position on a wild pitch, but was stranded.
  • Mia Haynes started for the Seawolves, tossing a clean first two innings before being staked to a lead.
  • All three Stony Brook runs in the third came around to score after Costello started a two-out rally with a single through the middle. Badger walked and the two came around to score on Kupinski's three-run homer.
  • Pacific pushed a run across on a sacrifice fly in the home half of the third.
  • Alicia Orosco and Kyra McFarland singled in the fourth and Costello doubled to plate Orosco and push the lead back to three runs.
  • Badger blasted her second homer of the season, a three-run shot to put Stony Brook ahead 7-1.
  • Haynes had a clean fourth and fifth inning, but surrendered a solo shot in the sixth.
  • Pacific rallied for four more runs in the bottom of the seventh, but Melaas came on to secure the final out and the save.
