Softball Picks Up Wins Over Nevada & Pacific in Saturday Sweep

STOCKTON, Calif. - The Stony Brook University softball team swept a pair of games on Saturday at the Libby Matson Tournament, defeating Nevada and Pacific. Ashton Melaas and Gabrielle Maday twirled complete games, while Alicia Orosco hit the first homer of her collegiate career to highlight a two-win afternoon on the west coast for the Seawolves.

GAME 1: STONY BROOK 4 - NEVADA 1
  • Melaas got the start for the Seawolves, retiring five of the first six batters she faced.
  • Nevada opened the scoring in the second, plating a run on a two-out single after a sacrifice bunt.
  • The Seawolves were held without a baserunner through four innings before Corinne Badger reached to lead off the fifth after being hit by a pitch.
  • Naiah Ackerman ended Nevada's no-hit bid with a two-out single later in the frame, but a pop up ended the inning.
  • Stony Brook rallied in the sixth, loading the bases with one out with singles from Julianna Sanzone, Orosco and Kyra McFarland. Alyssa Costello plated a pair of runners with a single, giving the Seawolves a 2-1 lead.
  • A fielding error on a ball put in play by Catherine Anne Kupinski pushed two more runs across, padding Stony Brook's lead to 4-1.
  • Melaas allowed a lead-off single to start the seventh, but retired the next three batters to finish off a complete-game effort in the circle.

GAME 2: STONY BROOK 2 - PACIFIC 1
  • Maday started game two for the Seawolves, allowing just one base runner in her first trip through the Pacific order.
  • Orosco hit a solo homer to open the scoring in the third inning. The senior from Stockton, California native blasted one over the wall in right, the first round-tripper of her collegiate career.
  • Maday worked around a pair of hits and an error in the fourth, stranding a pair of Tigers to work a scoreless fourth frame.
  • Julianna Sanzone started the fifth with a double down the leftfield line, moving to third on a sacrifice bunt by Brooke Dye. McFarland drove Sanzone home with a single into center, doubling Stony Brook's lead in the fifth.
  • Maday locked in, retiring the side in order in the fifth and sixth innings. One run came around to score in the seventh, but Maday shut the door and closed out the victory with a fly out to center.

STATS AND NOTES
  • Stony Brook's win over Nevada was the first in program history. The Seawolves had lost their previous three meetings with Nevada.

QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"We played two complete ball games to earn two wins today. Our pitching and defense were outstanding, and we competed at the plate with several players clutching up," head coach Megan T. Bryant said. "We are still early in our season and it's great to see the progress our team is making."
