Stony Brook Falls Just Short in Loss to Creighton

STOCKTON, Calif. - The Stony Brook University softball team fell to Creighton, 5-3, on the final day of the Libby Matson Tournament at Pacific University on Sunday. Julianna Sanzone hit her first homerun of the season, but it wasn't enough offense to overcome the Blue Jays.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Both teams put a runner on with two outs in the first inning, but neither team scratched across a run.
  • Emily Reinstein singled in the second inning, Stony Brook's first hit, but was left on base.
  • Mia Haynes retired the side in order in the second, but ran into trouble in the third. A pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases, then Creighton's third single of the inning plated the first two runs of the game. Gabrielle Maday entered in relief and secured the final two outs, leaving the two runners she inherited stranded in scoring position.
  • Stony Brook responded in the top of the fourth on a two-out single off the bat of Reinstein.
  • A leadoff double in the bottom of the frame, followed by a single that put the Blue Jays ahead 3-1.
  • Ashton Melaas relieved Maday to start the fifth, allowing two runs.
  • Down four runs, Sanzone popped one over the fence in left center to narrow the deficit to two runs. Alyssa Costello, who led off the inning with a double, scored.
  • Melaas produced a 1-2-3 sixth inning, but the Seawolves went down in order in the seventh, coming up short in the tournament's final game.
STATS AND NOTES
  • Today's meeting was the first in program history with Creighton.
  • Sanzone's home run, a two-run shot, was her first of the season and third of her career. The other two round-trippers came during her freshman campaign.
  • Reinstein's multi-hit game was her first this season and the third of her career.
  • Haynes worked 2.1 innings, allowing two runs on four hits, striking out two. She was saddled with the loss.
  • Maday allowed a run in 1.2 innings of relief work, while Melaas was tagged with a pair of runs across her two innings pitched out of the pen today.
  • Stony Brook concluded play at the Libby Matson Tournament, going 3-2 during the west coast trip.

QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES

"This last one was a winnable game for us if we had been more productive offensively and had made the Creighton pitcher work harder. We will learn from it and continue to improve as a team," head coach Megan T. Bryant said. "It was a good tournament for us. We like the strides we made this weekend and have a lot of great takeaways as we move forward in our season."

UP NEXT
Stony Brook hits the road for a pair of weekend doubleheaders at George Mason (March 2) and George Washington (March 3). Both of the twin bills are set for noon starts; the doubleheader against George Washington will stream live on ESPN+ from the nation's capital.
