Men’s Basketball Ends Impressive Run in CAA Final, Falls to Charleston in Overtime

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Stony Brook men's basketball finished a thrilling run in the 2024 CAA Men's Basketball Championship, rallying late to force overtime before ultimately falling in a 82-79 decision to the College of Charleston at the Entertainment & Sports Arena on Tuesday.

The Seawolves were led by Tyler Stephenson-Moore's 26 points, while Keenan Fitzmorris added 16. Fitzmorris and Andre Snoddy each grabbed seven rebounds to lead Stony Brook, while Fitzmorris added three blocks defensively. Aaron Clarke distributed seven assists on the evening for a team high.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Two threes by Stephenson-Moore and another from Snoddy gave the Seawolves a 9-4 lead 2:33 into the ballgame, but Charleston responded with a 7-0 run to take their first lead of the night.
  • Down 13-11, the Cougars went on a 11-2 run over 3:28 to grab a 22-15 lead at the 10:14 mark, their biggest of the half.
  • Stony Brook then responded with a 13-2 run of its own to take a 28-24 lead with 7:08 left in the first. Four different Seawolves made field goals during the run.
  • After five ensuing lead changes, the Seawolves used a 7-1 run over the final 2:01 of the half to take a 40-35 lead at the break.
  • The Cougars opened up the second half with an 14-2 run to re-take the lead, finishing with a three for a 49-42 lead at the 14:30 mark.
  • Stony Brook outscored Charleston 12-6 over the next 3:12 to pull within one at 55-54, with Fitzmorris making three field goals in the stretch.
  • Charleston extended the lead to 66-56, its biggest of the night, with 8:57 remaining, finishing off an 8-0 run over 1:47 with back-to-back threes.
  • Down 73-64, Dean Noll and Snoddy hit back-to-back jumpers, followed by a three and a driving layup from Clarke to tie the game at 73 at 2:12. Both teams remained scoreless the rest of regulation to force the extra period.
  • Charleston scored the first six points of overtime to grab a 79-73 advantage at the 1:17 mark. A three by Stephenson-Moore on the next possession put Stony Brook within a score.
  • After a stop, Stephenson-Moore's tying attempt missed, followed by two made free throws for the Cougars. Clarke's three pulled the Seawolves within tow points, 81-79, with 3.9 seconds left. After a make and a miss at the other end of the floor, Noll's three-quarter court heave missed.
STATS AND NOTES
  • The game featured 28 threes made – 15 from Stony Brook and 13 from Charleston, the most combined threes in a CAA Championship final. The 15 threes were Stony Brook's second-most of the season, having made 16 against Bryant on Dec. 9.
  • Stony Brook turned the ball over just seven times on the night, the seventh time this season the Seawolves have committed seven or fewer.
  • Stephenson-Moore's 26 points finished just two short of a career high. He made a career-high seven three-point field goals on the evening, finishing 7-for-12. He also never exited the game before the final seconds after fouling out, playing the most minutes out of either side.
  • Fitzmorris notched his 10th game of 15 points or more this season.
  • Tuesday marked just the second time a 7-seed has even played in the CAA final, with the other being East Carolina in 1993.
  • The CAA final went to overtime for the first time since 2016.
  • Stony Brook played in its sixth conference championship game at the Division I level on Tuesday and played in its first since 2016.
  • There were 11 lead changes and four ties in the championship contest, with the biggest lead for either side being 10.
