STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The Stony Brook University softball team swept Manhattan in a Wednesday doubleheader.
Mia Haynes and
Gabrielle Maday threw shutouts, while the Seawolves' offense scored 15 runs across 10 innings to power past the Jaspers.
GAME ONE: STONY BROOK 8 - MANHATTAN 0 (5 INN.)
- The Seawolves took the lead in the second on Julianna Sanzone's homer to center. Later in the frame, Kyra McFarland laced a two-run single, followed by a run-scoring double off the bat of Alyssa Costello.
- A fifth run came around to score on a fielding error, giving the Seawolves a 5-0 advantage after two innings.
- Sanzone plated another run in the fourth inning, producing a run-scoring single to make it 6-0.
- Stony Brook enacted the eight-run rule in the fifth inning after Costello drove in a run and Catherine Anne Kupinski doubled to the fence in left to score Costello and end game one.
- Haynes dealt, tossing a four-hit shutout. She walked one and struck out five batters.
GAME TWO: STONY BROOK 7 - MANHATTAN 0 (5 INN.)
- An RBI single from Kupinski opened the scoring in the first frame, plating McFarland from second base.
- Alicia Orosco came around to score from second base in the third inning on an Emily Reinstein fly ball to right field after the throw into the third went array.
- Corinne Badger doubled the Seawolves' lead in the fourth inning with a no-doubt, two-run shot to left.
- Reinstein hit a sacrifice fly to make it 5-0 in the fifth. Later in the frame, Naiah Ackerman doubled home two more runners to give the Seawolves' a seven-run lead.
- With the winning run 60 feet away and the rain falling, the game was called due to the weather.
- Maday went the distance for Stony Brook, giving up two hits, walking two and striking out five.
STATS AND NOTES
- Five Seawolves had multi-hit games, with McFarland and Kupinski picking up multiple hits in both games.
- Haynes' and Maday's shutouts were their first of the season. Seawolves pitching now has three shutouts on the season.
- Badger and Sanzone left the yard today; Badger tied Kupinski for the team lead in HRs (4), while Sanzone blasted her third of the season.
- Stony Brook went 4-for-9 (.444) with runners in scoring position in game one. The Seawolves were 2-6 (.333) in game two with runners in scoring position.
Seawolves' hitters drew seven walks from Manhattan pitching across both games.
- Stony Brook has now won five straight over Manhattan and nine of the last 10 meetings dating back to 2018.

"We brought a good team to the field today in all facets," head coach Megan T. Bryant said. "We defended well, we pitched well, we were very productive offensively, we had a lot of good energy and competed hard."
