Seawolves Drop Doubleheader Against Delaware

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Stony Brook University softball team dropped a pair of games to Delaware on Friday afternoon at University Field. Mia Haynes pitched well in game one, striking out eight batters, but came up on the short end of the decision, while the team's late rally in game two came up just short.

GAME ONE: DELAWARE 3, STONY BROOK 1

  • The Blue Hens opened the scoring in the first inning, starting things with a walk, a single and a double that brought two runners around to score.
  • Stony Brook answered in the third inning, though one run was cut down at the plate. Julianna Sanzone notched an RBI single that scored Alyssa Costello, pulling the Seawolves within one run.
  • The Blue Hens added an insurance run in the fifth courtesy of a two-out single into left.
  • Delaware's Winburn retired the side in order in the fourth and fifth innings, and the first two hitters in the sixth, before Naiah Ackerman doubled into the gap to bring the tying run to the plate, but nothing came of it for Stony Brook.
  • The Seawolves were set down 1-2-3 in the seventh, falling in game one.
GAME TWO: DELAWARE 9, STONY BROOK 6
  • Delaware started fast in game two, putting up a four spot in the first inning. A two-run homer, compounded with an error that led to two more runs, put the Blue Hens ahead 4-0 early on.
  • The Seawolves pushed across a run after some small ball, with Costello singling home Alicia Orosco after a sacrifice bunt by Kyra McFarland.
  • The Blue Hens added two more runs in the second, taking a five-run lead.
  • Stony Brook scratched across another run in the home half on a Corinne Badger single through the left side. The Seawolves stranded a pair of runners in scoring position to end the frame.
  • An Ackerman double in the third plated another run, trimming the deficit to 6-3 before the Blue Hens extended the lead to six runs with three more runs in the top of the fourth.
  • After being held scoreless in the fourth, Stony Brook added a run in the fifth and sixth innings, trailing 9-5 heading into the seventh.
  • A wild pitch allowed Stony Brook to make it a three-run ballgame in the seventh. Down to the final out, Badger stepped to the plate representing the winning run with the bases loaded. She flew out to the warning track, ending game two.
QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"Two tough ballgames. We had some opportunities to put up some more runs in game one, that we didn't capitalize on," head coach Megan T. Bryant said. "In game two, they came out and threw some punches early. I thought we responded well in terms of staying in the game and continuing to score. Definitely two winnable games for us today."
