Softball Drops Doubleheader Against Campbell on CAA Opening Weekend

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The Stony Brook University softball team fell in a doubleheader to Campbell to open the CAA slate on Saturday afternoon at University Field.

GAME 1: CAMPBELL 3, STONY BROOK 0
  • Both sides put a runner on in the opening frame, though neither offense pushed across a run in the first inning.
  • Campbell opened the scoring in the second inning, plating a pair of runs on fielding errors.
  • Naiah Ackerman reached on an error with two outs in the home half of the inning, advancing to third on a Brooke Dye single, but both runners were left on base.
  • Makayla McClain led off the third with a solo homer, pushing the Camels' lead to three runs through three innings.
  • Campbell's Isabella Smith found her groove in the circle, holding Stony Brook hitless for the next three innings.
  • Alicia Orosco started the sixth inning with an infield single, advancing to second after Catheine Anne Kupinski drew a one-out walk. Smith promptly struck out the next two hitters to neutralize the threat.
  • The Seawolves were retired in order in the seventh, falling to Campbell in game one.

GAME 2: CAMPBELL 6, STONY BROOK 4
  • Ashton Melaas drew the start in game two for the Seawolves, surrendering two runs in the opening inning. Back-to-back-to-back singles allowed two runs to score, but Melaas registered a strikeout to strand a pair and limit the damage.
  • Orosco notched her second single of the afternoon but was cut down trying to steal second to end the inning.
  • After the first two Seawolves were retired to start the second, Emily Reinstein popped her first homer of the season, getting Stony Brook on the board for the first time on Saturday.
  • A single by Ackerman, a base on balls drawn by Dye and a wild pitch put the go-ahead runs in scoring position for Stony Brook, but Campbell's Leierer came out of the pen to neutralize the threat.
  • A solo homer to lead off the third provided Campbell with an answer to Reinstein's solo shot, building the Camels lead back to two runs.
  • Kyra McFarland and Orosco reached to start the home half of the third, with McFarland eventually scoring on a wild pitch to make it a one-run game. Kupinski made it a one-run game in favor of the Seawolves when she blasted a homer to center, giving Stony Brook its first lead of the day.
  • After a scoreless fourth inning, Campbell regained the lead in the fifth with a pair of runs. The Camels added an insurance run in the sixth, taking hold of a 6-4 lead.
  • The Seawolves were set down in order in the sixth and the seventh after Campbell's Smith entered in the fifth to retire the final eight batters of the contest.

QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"Tough day for us. Certainly not the start to conference play that we wanted," head coach Megan T. Bryant said. "Not our best two games of the season thus far. I thought we could have done all three things better: pitching, offense and defense."
