Kupinski's HR, Haynes' Six Strikeouts Not Enough in Series Finale Loss to Campbell

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The Stony Brook University softball team fell to Campbell, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon at University Field. Catherine Anne Kupinski hit her team-leading third homer of the season, while Mia Haynes struck out six in a complete-game effort in the circle.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Haynes worked around a two-out double to toss a clean first inning.
  • Kyra McFarland and Alyssa Costello earned free passes in the home half of the first inning, but a pair of strikeouts ended an early threat from the Seawolves' offense.
  • After a lead-off single to start the second, Haynes retired the next two batters before allowing a two-run homer.
  • Naiah Ackerman reached safely on a fielding error in the infield, but nothing came of the opportunity for Stony Brook in the second inning.
  • Campbell put a runner in scoring position with one out in the third inning, but Haynes put the next two hitters away to keep the Camels from adding an insurance run.
  • Kupinski led off the fourth inning with a no-doubt home run over the fence in left, getting her squad on the board.
  • Both offenses put a runner on in the fifth frame but came up empty.
  • Costello reached safely to lead off the sixth on a bunt single. After a free pass drawn by Kupinski, Julianna Sanzone successfully sacrificed the runners with a bunt. A pop up and ground out ended the Seawolves' best chance at pushing another run across.
  • Corinne Badger pinch hit and drew a walk in the seventh, but the next three batters were retired to end the game.

QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"Really tough ballgame today. I thought Mia threw extremely well and gave us a shot to win it," head coach Megan T. Bryant said. "I was disappointed we didn't do more offensively to help ourselves."
