WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The Stony Brook University softball team swept a doubleheader at Monmouth on Saturday afternoon. Mia Haynes and Gabrielle Maday tossed complete games to earn victories in the circle, while Catherine Anne Kupinski plated six of Stony Brook's 12 runs in the afternoon sweep.
GAME ONE: STONY BROOK 4, MONMOUTH 3
- The Seawolves got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the top of the first inning. Stony Brook scored twice, with one run coming across on senior Julianna Sanzone's single.
- After the Hawks rallied to tie the ballgame at two, the Seawolves came back to retake the lead in the third inning. Stony Brook picked up two runs in the frame, the big hit being an RBI double from Kupinski, which brought the score to 4-2 in favor of the Seawolves.
- Monmouth put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but Stony Brook still held on for the 4-3 win.
- Haynes set the side down in order in the fifth and sixth innings after allowing a run in the fourth, then shut the door in the seventh, working around a one-out single.
GAME TWO: STONY BROOK 8, MONMOUTH 0 (5 INNINGS)
- The Seawolves took an early lead in the second inning, scoring five runs, including a three-run double off the bat of Kupinski. Corinne Badger and Kyra McFarland added RBIs in the frame.
- Alyssa Costello added on in the fourth inning, plating McFarland and Alicia Orosco with a single in the fourth.
- Kupinski tallied another RBI in the fourth, pushing Stony Brook's lead to eight runs.
- Maday closed things out in the circle, retiring the final six batters in order with some help from her defense, who turned a pair of double plays behind her.
STATS AND NOTES
- Haynes picked up her team-leading seventh win in game one, giving up three runs, on seven hits, allowing two walks and striking out five. She went the distance for the sixth time this season.
- Maday matched Haynes' effort in game two, notching her seventh victory of the season as well. Over five scoreless innings, Maday allowed three hits and struck out one. The shutout was her second of the season.
- Kupinski drove in six runs in the two games, powering Stony Brook's offense. She went 2-for-3 in game two with a double and four RBI.
- McFarland compiled a noteworthy performance at the dish as well in game two, going 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
- Badger also chipped in for Stony Brook, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate while adding a double and an RBI in the run-rule victory in the second game.
- Orosco, Naiah Ackerman and Julianna Sanzone all registered multiple hits in one of the two games today.
- As an offense, the Seawolves worked eight walks across the two games.
- Monmouth did not have an at-bat with a runner in scoring position in game two.
- Stony Brook improved to 8-1-1 all-time against Monmouth. The Seawolves have won five straight over the Hawks, including two run-rule victories.

"We put all three parts of our game together today to earn two important wins," head coach Megan T. Bryant said. "We played with great intent and purpose and our execution was excellent. Tomorrow it's about continuing our approach and finishing the series strong."
