STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Gabrielle Maday and Jordyn Fray combined to throw a two-hit shutout on Tuesday as Stony Brook blanked Sacred Heart, 8-0, in five innings at University Field.
Maday started in the circle for Stony Brook, going three shutout innings without giving up a hit, walking none and striking out one to earn her eighth pitching win of the season. Fray pitched well out of the bullpen, tossing two shutout innings, allowing two hits, walking none and striking out one.
At the plate, the Seawolves were led by Alyssa Costello, who went 3-for-3 on the day with a double and a run batted in out of the nine hole. Alicia Orosco put together a standout day at the dish as well, going 2-for-3 with two RBI. Corinne Badger also chipped in, putting together one hit in two trips to the plate with a triple and an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Seawolves took the lead for good in the first, scoring for the first time in the inning when Badger tripled in Orosco.
- Costello added another run in the second inning, bringing around Sofia Chambers with an opposite-field double.
- The Seawolves then tacked on three runs in the third and fifth innings. Julianna Sanzone started the scoring in the third with a run-scoring double.
- Naiah Ackerman made it 5-0, driving in Sanzone with a sacrifice fly to round out the scoring in the third inning.
- Fray entered in relief of Maday, who threw three hitless innings. Fray tossed two scoreless innings before Stony Brook ended things in the bottom of the fifth.
- Two of the three runs in the fifth scored on a two-run single off the bat of Orosco.
- Kyra McFarland ended the game with an RBI double.
STATS AND NOTES
- Maday and Fray combined to throw a two-hit shutout. It marked the seventh shutout of the season for the Seawolves, including the third straight and fourth in the last five games.
- Three hitless innings were enough for Maday to notch a victory in the circle, her eighth of the season, which is tied with Mia Haynes for the team lead.
- Costello compiled three base hits in the game for Stony Brook, the second time this season she tallied at least three hits (4 at George Mason). Costello stole two bases in Tuesday's game, marking a new season-high.
- The Seawolves out-hit the Pioneers at a 10-2 clip. The squad moved to 6-0 this season when tallying double-digit hits.
- Stony Brook went 6-for-14 (.429) with runners in scoring position.
- The victory marked Stony Brook's seventh straight and was the fifth run-rule victory of the season.
- The Seawolves moved to 27-13-1 all-time against Sacred Heart.
