Eight Seawolves Garner All-CAA Honors; Masera Named CAA Midfielder of the Year & Spallina Tabbed CAA Coach of the Year

RICHMOND, Va. – Eight members of the Stony Brook women's lacrosse team earned All-CAA honors; senior Ellie Masera was tabbed the CAA Midfielder of the Year, and Joe Spallina took home the CAA Coach of the Year award. The Seawolves had four student-athletes named to the All-CAA First Team, three student-athletes on the Second Team, and one All-Rookie selection.
 
Masera, graduate attack Kailyn Hart, graduate attack Alex Finn, and junior defender Avery Hines were all selected to the All-CAA First Team. Senior defender Clare Levy, senior midfielder Jaden Hampel, and graduate midfielder Charlotte Verhulst earned second team honors. Freshman midfielder Isabella Caporuscio was tabbed to the CAA All-Rookie Team.
 
For Masera, it marks the second year in a row that she has been awarded the CAA Midfielder of the Year and the third time in her career that she has claimed a conference player of the year honor (was named 2022 America East Midfielder of the Year). Spallina captures his second consecutive CAA Coach of the Year honor and 11th overall in his career (two CAA, six America East, two NE-10, one ECC).
 
Masera has recorded 93 points (63 goals, 30 assists) and 125 draw controls in 15 games this season. The Tewaaraton award nominee ranks ninth in the nation in draw controls per game (8.3), ninth in goals (63), sixth in goals per game (4.2), fourth in points (93), second in points per game (6.2), first in shots (10.1), and first in shots per game (7.5). She leads the CAA in goals, goals per game, points, points per game, shots, and shots per game.
 
Earlier this season, she netted her 200th career goal in a win over Rutgers on April 9, and became just the sixth player in program history to reach 200 career goals in their career. Masera was also named the USA Lacrosse DI Player of the Week (Feb. 27) and IWLCA DI National Offensive Player of the Week (Feb. 27) and took home four CAA Player of the Week honors (Feb. 26, March 4, April 15, April 22).
 
Spallina has led the Seawolves to a 15-2 overall record, which includes going a perfect 8-0 in CAA play. Stony Brook earned the No. 1 overall seed in the CAA Tournament and the Regular Season Championship after it defeated Long Island rival Hofstra, 18-5, on April 21. Spallina has led the Seawolves to 61 consecutive conference wins, a streak that began in 2015, and a 17-0 record in conference and conference tournament games as a member of the CAA.
 
On April 6, Spallina picked up his 200th career win at Stony Brook with a 17-4 victory over Delaware. Over his career at Stony Brook, he has posted a stellar record of 205-39 and his overall career head coaching record is 278-41.
 
Hart has tallied 74 points (59 goals, 15 assists) in 16 games this season. She was tabbed to the Tewaaraton Watch List and was named the CAA Player of the week on April 8. Hart ranks second in the CAA in goals, second in goals per game (3.7), fourth in points, third in points per game (4.6), second in shots (132), and second in shots per game (8.3). The attack has registered 12 hat tricks this season and scored a season-high seven goals in the 17-4 win over Delaware on April 6. In Stony Brook's win over Rutgers on April 9, she became the fifth player in program history to record their 200th career goal.
 
Hines has been a force on the Seawolves' defense as she is a two-time IWLCA National Defensive Player of the Week (April 9, April 23) and a three-time CAA Defensive Player of the Week (April 8, April 15, April 22). The defender has caused 49 turnovers and picked up 34 ground balls. Her 49 caused turnovers are currently the fourth-most in a single-season in program history. The junior ranks fourth in the nation in caused turnovers per game (2.9) and is second in the CAA in both caused turnovers and caused turnovers per game.
 
In her first season on Long Island, Finn has helped fuel the offense with 78 points (28 goals, 50 assists). She was named to the Tewaaraton Watch List and took home CAA Player of the Week honors once this season (Feb. 19). The graduate ranks seventh in the nation in assists (50) and eighth in assists per game (2.9). She leads the CAA in assists, is third in points, and fourth in points per game. Finn has registered multiple points in 14 games this season and dished out three or more assists in a game seven times.
 
Levy anchored the Seawolves' defense as she was a member of the Tewaaraton Watch List and earned the CAA Defensive Player of the Week on February 19. In 14 games, she has tallied 12 points (eight goals, four assists), 49 draw controls, 26 ground balls, and nine caused turnovers. Her 12 points and eight goals are both career highs.
 
Verhulst has had a standout season for the Seawolves as she has totaled 51 points (36 goals, 15 assists) and 54 draw controls. The graduate leads the team with a .571 shooting percentage and .857 shots on goal percentage. Her 51 points, 36 goals, and 15 assists are all career highs. Verhulst has also picked up 20 ground balls which is tied for a career-high.
 
Hampel has played in 14 games and totaled 17 points (11 goals, six assists), 17 draw controls, and 11 ground balls. She has recorded four multi-point games this season and scored the game-winning goal in the thrilling, 11-10, overtime victory over No. 19 Stanford on April 25.
 
In her first season of collegiate lacrosse, Caporuscio has made her mark with 12 points (nine goals, three assists), 17 ground balls, 11 draw controls, and eight caused turnovers. She leads all freshmen on the team in points and ground balls. The freshman has recorded three multi-point games this season and tallied two multi-goal games.
 
Stony Brook returns to the field on Thursday, May 2, when it hosts the No. 4 seed Elon in the CAA Tournament semifinals at noon. The winner of the semifinal will take on either Hofstra or Drexel in the CAA Championship game on Saturday, May 4, at 12:30 p.m.
