STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Stony Brook men's basketball announced the addition of Jeremiah Nyarko (Forward, 6-9, Accra, Ghana) to the program. Nyarko signed with Stony Brook on Wednesday.
"We are really excited to add Jeremiah to our program," head coach Geno Ford said. "His versatility and athleticism will be significant for our frontcourt."
Nyarko comes to the Island by way of Western Texas College and the University of San Diego. Nyarko played scholastically at Sierra Canyon High School and St. John Bosco High School and represented his home country of Ghana for the NBA Academy and Basketball Without Borders.
"Jeremiah can impact the game on both ends for us. He can play with his back to the basket. He can step out and stretch the defense with his shooting. He can play from the high post as a scorer and as a passer and he has highlight-reel finishing abilities," Ford added. "Defensively, he can switch onto smaller players and keep them in front with his length and athleticism. He will provide basket protection and rebounding for us."
In his lone season at Western Texas, Nyarko started in 17 of the 19 games that he appeared in and averaged 14.0 points, 5.3 rebounds per game while shooting 53.1 percent from the floor and 37.2 percent from three-point range. Nyarko produced double-digit points in 13 games, including a 42-point performance against Temple College. He registered a pair of double-doubles as well.
"Jeremiah was the epitome of an 'everyday guy'," Western Texas men's basketball head coach Matt Hardy said. "As a veteran of Division I basketball, he was a great example for our younger guys that hadn't been at that level, as to the work it takes to play high-level college basketball."
"Jeremiah can do things that a normal 6'9 player can't do. He's a 40 percent guy from three that can really stretch the floor and guard multiple positions," Hardy added. "That, mixed with his high-major athleticism and build will make him a force in the CAA."
Nyarko gained Division I experience at the University of San Diego, appearing in 16 games as a freshman during the 2022-23 season. Nyarko tallied 12 points in 21 minutes, connecting on five of his nine field goal attempts while adding four rebounds in a victory over San Diego Christian. As a rookie, Nyarko registered a rebound in nine of his 14 contests and produced a blocked shot in three games.
After beginning his career at St. John Bosco High School, where he was a two-time all-league player and named the Student-Athlete of the Year with a 4.0 grade point average, Nyarko played at Sierra Canyon. Nyarko helped Sierra Canyon post a 26-5 overall record and advance to the Southern California Regional, finishing the season with a No. 17 ranking nationally according to USA Today.
