GREENSBORO, N.C. - N.C. A&T's one-run seventh proved to be the difference in the ballgame, as the Stony Brook Seawolves lost a heartbreaker to the Aggies, 3-2, on Thursday to open the series versus the Aggies.
Senior Mia Haynes (13-7) got the ball to start for Stony Brook (32-15, 17-8) and took the loss. The right-hander went 6.1 innings, giving up three runs, two earned, on five hits, allowing two walks and striking out seven.
Offensively, the Seawolves were paced by Naiah Ackerman who went 2-for-3 with an extra base-hit. Corinne Badger went 1-for-3 and tallied the only run batted in for the squad.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Seawolves opened the scoring in the first inning with an RBI single from Badger that scored Kyra McFarland from second base.
- After the 1-2-3 inning by Haynes in the first, the Aggies got on the board in the second inning by tallying two runs from an RBI triple from Williams and error from the Stony Brook defense.
- Both teams went scoreless over the third and fourth innings. Haynes stranded a runner on base in the third inning and tossed a 1-2-3 inning for the fourth.
- Stony Brook got back on the scoreboard and tied the game 2-2 in the fifth. The two-out rally began with a knock from Alicia Orosco followed by an error from Elon on a grounder from McFarland that brought home Orosco.
- Haynes left a runner on third base in the fifth inning and stranded a runner on second base in the following inning.
- Following the hit-by-pitch drawn by the Aggies, the road team would double down the line to bring home the winning run and secured the 3-2 victory.
STATS AND NOTES
- Ackerman led the way at the plate for the Seawolves after finishing 2-for-3 with an extra base-hit. It marked the seventh multi-hit game of the season for the sophomore.
- Orosco, McFarland and Costello all stole a base. The Seawolves were one stolen-base shy of shattering the season-high (4 vs FDU on April 17). Badger tallied the lone RBI for the Seawolves and went 1-for-3 at the plate. She is second on the team with 30 RBI this season.
- McFarland and Orosco both had a knock in the defeat.
- Stony Brook went 3-for-10 with two outs.
- Haynes made her team-high 24th start of the year. The right-hander allowed three runs (two earned) and struck out seven batters. She limited N.C. A&T to an 0-for-4 mark with runners in scoring position. It was her seventh game of the season with at least seven strikeouts.
- The Seawolves moved to 16-4 on the road this season.
- Stony Brook is now 1-2 all-time against North Carolina A&T, dating back to 2013.
