Weigele Wins Individually, Women's Cross Country Places Second at Stony Brook Season Opener

STONY BROOK, N.Y.- The Stony Brook University women's cross country team took second place at the Stony Brook Season Opener on Saturday morning. Senior Grace Weigele raced to a first-place finish in the 4K, headlining a number of strong performances for the Seawolves.

As a team, Stony Brook finished second with a total of 43 points, with three runners finishing in the top 10. Weigele shined in the 4K, pacing the entire field to a first-place finish with a time of 13:55.40. Two more Seawolves finished in the top-10 Grace Sisson (8th) and Rebecca Clackett (10th). 

Five more Seawolves registered top-20 placements: Ava Carsley (11th), Shaylen Goslar (13th), Niamh Durcan (14th), Jade Pazmino (19th) and Miranda Gatto (20th). 

HIGHLIGHTS 
 
  • For the second consecutive season, Weigele took first in the 4K event at the season opener, posting an average mile time of 5:36. Her 13:55.40 clocking was nearly seven seconds faster than second place and was the only sub-14 minute race and was a new personal record. 
  • Sisson's 14:35.80 time was good for eighth place. 
  • Clackett's 14:47.40 earned her tenth place and was a new career-best time.

"It was a nice opening day for both squads, led by strong individual runs by Collin and Grace," head coach Andy Ronan said. "A lot to be encouraged about, but we have plenty of work to do to be ready in November for the championship part of our season."
