Seven Saves by Hennings, Two Goals from Rich Power Seawolves Past Charleston

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. — Stony Brook shutout Charleston, 2-0, on the strength of seven saves by Jona Hennings and two goals from Reilly Rich on Thursday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Charleston had early opportunities going forward, but Stony Brook's Jona Hennings and the defensive unit did well to hold the Cougars at bay over the opening 20 minutes of play.

Leah Rifas made a move to evade a defender, drawing a foul inside the box and granting the Seawolves a penalty kick. Reilly Rich stepped up for Stony Brook and converted to open the scoring in the 33rd minute.

Following Stony Brook's lidlifter, both Maya Corbett and Rifas had prime chances at goal, but were turned away on great saves by Charleston's keeper. The 1-0 advantage in favor of the Seawolves held heading into the halftime break.

Stony Brook's efforts to pad the lead carried into the second half, with Hannah Maracina having a couple of runs and opportunities at goal, to no avail. Hennings was up to the task on her first test of the second half, positioning herself well to stymie Charleston's first true threat at an equalizer during the second half.

Rich added an insurance tally in the 71st minute, gathering a cross from Hedvig Helling, turning and firing one into the back of the net for her second goal of the match.

Hennings made five second-half saves, with the last coming off of a Charleston corner in the 87th minute to put the finishing touches on a Seawolves shutout victory in South Carolina.

STATS AND NOTES
  • Rich increased her CAA-leading goal total to 12 with a pair of goals in the victory. Her first came from the penalty spot; Rich is a perfect 2-2 on penalty kicks this season and the Seawolves are 4-4 as a unit.
  • Hennings totaled seven saves en route to her second solo shutout and 10th victory of the season.
  • Helling notched the assist on Rich's second goal of the evening, her team-leading seventh helper of the 2025 campaign.
