HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - Stony Brook was bested by its cross-island rival on the road tonight as Hofstra took the first match of the weekend 3-0 (28-30, 13-25, 16-25).
Quinn Anderson finished with eight kills on the day to lead the Seawolves offense, while Madison Cigna totaled 10 digs to lead them defensively.
How It Happened
SET 1 | Set one proved to be the closest of the night as the two teams were tied 10 times in what eventually ended in a narrow 30-28 win for Hofstra. Taking advantage of six early errors from the Pride, Stony Brook kept things neck and neck at 10-10 before going on a 5-0 run that saw Lei Lasike and Ayanna Pierre Louis block three straight attacks to make it 15-10. The Seawolves later got to set point at 24-21, only for four-straight Hofstra points to force a tiebreaker. After trading points all the way to 28-28, it was the Pride who ultimately came out on top with the final two points.
SET 2 | Stony Brook fell into a 2-0 whole on the night after dropping the second set 25-13. Halfway through the set, the Seawolves were still within three points at 15-12 as five combined kills from Anderson and Kali Moore kept the pressure on. However, the Pride quickly responded with a 7-0 run to put the set away for good.
SET 3 | Like in set two, the final set of the night saw the Seawolves keep things close early on, fighting back from a 4-0 deficit to pull within one at 10-9. Once again, though, Hofstra got hot and rattled off another 7-0 run to fully retake the momentum and ride it to a 25-16 win.
