Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Two goals From Rich Propels Women's Soccer To Win Over Hofstra, Advancing To CAA Semis

STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Two goals from Reilly Rich, including the game-winner via a penalty kick in overtime, propelled Stony Brook women's soccer to the CAA Semifinals, as the Seawolves defeated Long Island foe No. 3 Hofstra 2-1 in the CAA Quarterfinal match on Thursday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Hofstra controlled much of the possession early, but was unable to find the back of the net, as three saves from Jona Hennings kept things scoreless. Stony Brook opened the scoring in the 30th minute when Abigail Roche, on a free kick, found Rich, who buried a header into the back of the net, giving the Seawolves a 1-0 advantage heading into the break.

The Pride maintained possession at the start of the second half, as they had in the first, creating multiple scoring opportunities and eventually tying the game with an unassisted goal at the 55:32 mark. Following the tying goal, Hofstra continued to apply pressure in the Stony Brook zone, controlling possession and creating several scoring chances.

Despite this, the Pride attack was unable to convert its opportunities, as stout defensive play and clutch goalkeeping from Hennings kept things even at 1-1, sending the Quarterfinal matchup into overtime.

In the 10-minute overtime period, neither team generated much on offense. With less than a minute left, it seemed likely that the game would head to a second overtime. However, with just 8 seconds remaining, a foul by Hofstra resulted in a penalty kick for Rich. She converted the kick, sending the Seawolves to the CAA Semifinals.
