TOWSON, Md. - The Stony Brook volleyball team pulled off a stunning upset tonight as they came back after dropping the first set to secure a 3-1 win (20-25, 25-23, 25-23, 25-20) against first-place Towson on the road on Halloween night.
The Seawolves attack was paced by Kali Moore, who finished with 22 kills on the day, followed by Quinn Anderson with 10 kills. Defensively, Stony Brook had three players reach double figures in digs, including Ava Zamora with 19, Madison Cigna with 16, and Zayda Fuertez with 10. From the front row, Mopelola Ojo contributed six blocks while Moore added six rejections.
How It Happened
SET 1 | The Seawolves found themselves in an early deficit, losing the first set 25-20. Stony Brook was unable to overcome a slow start and trailed for the entire set despite three kills apiece for Ojo and Ayanna Pierre Louis.
SET 2 | Stony Brook rallied after dropping the first set to take set two 25-23, tying the match at 1-1. The Seawolves pulled off a massive comeback in the second after being down as many as nine points at 19-10. The rally started with a 6-0 run featuring kills from Mercedes Motton, Ojo, and Moore to get the team back within three at 19-16. Still trailing by three at 23-20, the Seawolves fired off five unanswered as Moore got hot and recorded the final two kills to tie up the match,
SET 3 | Stony Brook went up 2-1 after taking down the Tigers in set three once again by a score of 25-23. This time, the Seawolves were the ones who came out to an early lead as Moore and Anderson combined for six kills to make it 12-8. From there the defense took over, blocking five Towson attacks in the set. Though the Tigers managed to claw all the way back and make it a one-point set late, Moore again came through with the final kill to finish off the set.
SET 4 | Stony Brook earned a match win with a 25-20 fourth-set victory. The Seawolves took a 1-0 lead and never looked back as they dominated the set, coming out to an 11-3 advantage. Ojo picked up three key blocks early on the stifle Towson's attack, while Motton, Moore, and Anderson all racked up multiple kills to give Stony Brook the set and the match.
