Seawolves Upended by Samford on Final Day of GSU Thanksgiving Tournament

ATLANTA, Ga. — Stony Brook fell to Samford, 58-48, on the final day of the Georgia State Thanksgiving Tournament. Janay Brantley led the Seawolves with six points and eight rebounds. Sandra Frau Garcia also added four points, four assists and four steals and Caitlin Frost helped out with nine points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Samford raced out to an early 6-0 lead before back-to-back baskets by Frost and Melissa Mwanza made it a two-point game just four minutes into play. The Seawolves were held without a field goal over the final six-plus minutes of the opening stanza, falling behind 11-6 after 10 minutes of action in Atlanta.

Stony Brook chipped away at that deficit and got within a point of Samford after a 5-0 run, punctuated by a three from Nal'La Bennett. The Bulldogs roared back to take a 14-point lead, using a 13-0 run that spanned more than four minutes. Samford led 27-16 entering the half.

Stony Brook equaled its halftime total in the third quarter alone, making things interesting heading to the final frame. Despite the offensive success in the third quarter, Stony Brook did not chip into Samford's lead, until the final minute of the frame. Bennett buried a triple with 16 seconds to bring the deficit back to single digits, 41-32, heading to the fourth.

Stony Brook battled back to make it a five-point game after a pair of Johanna Potter free throws with 5:54 left in regulation. Samford maintained its distance from that point on, providing an answer to every Stony Brook attempt to make it a one-possession game. Trailing 53-48 in the final minute following a Frau Garcia lay-in, the Seawolves could not find the bottom of the basket again, falling 58-48.
